What a great thread! We had a thought of doing a Hawaii based cruise (with time before/after on land) in Feb 2020, a few months before my retirement. Then we deferred, and BAM - Covid. Someday we may plan a trip there (probably without a cruise at least short term), but recent stories about rental car rates have deterred the thought.

thats behind a paywall

Just search USA Today July 2021 Maui. It doesn’t have a paywall when I view it via private viewing.

No luck with usa today. Paywall.

Here’s a different article with no paywall.

No problem getting the wristbands and so far all has been fabulous.

I recommend Mitsuwa (Asian grocery store w prepared food to go-2nd floor) at the International Marketplace and Paia Fish market…also Hau Tree Lanai but may need a reservation. (Waikiki)

@jym626 is not on Oahu.

I think the thread is for anyone traveling to Hawaii. Recommendations on all the islands will help someone.

Ok. If folks in Waikiki are willing to venture a bit by walking or other means of getting around, the Ala Moana shopping center has 3 food courts and the nearby area of Kapahulu has a lot of dining options as well.

Our Governor is pleading with folks NOT to fly to Hawaii and for folks to only travel on essential business due to terrible Delta surge that is jamming our hospitals badly.

IMO, the decision to lift testing requirements for fully vaccinated was premature. Testing served both as an extra virus gatekeeper and as a deterrent for some opportunistic tourists. A couple has been arrested for faking their vaccination status. That apparently happened because someone tipped off the authorities. I wonder how many have slipped through? It is a tad tougher to fake a test result that has to be uploaded on a special form into the Safe Travels portal.

The testing is also an extra expense that discourages people who just want a cheap vacation. Yup, many of us would have preferred testing remain in place. Too easy for folks to have fake VAX cards.

So sorry to hear that numbers are climbing in Hawaii. We had a lovey time. But a cheap vacation? Hawaii is not inexpensive!

My S is there right now with his GF’s family. I feel bad that you all are back to worrying more (we are too.) I will say they are all vaxxed, pro-mask, very cautious, and there for outdoor activities entirely. So my hope and belief is that they will not make things harder for you islanders.

They had a story about a woman who had her mastectomy postponed due to the covid crush and a guy with Parkinson’s who had his brain procedure delayed indefinitely as well also due to covid crush. :weary::mask:

My friend’s son is supposed to be married in Oahu in November. The wedding was postponed a year already. It may be doomed again. The governor has mandated no indoor gatherings of more than 10 even for weddings and no more than 25 for outdoor gatherings.
