Heading out for our first round of visits

fishymom, enjoy your visit to UVA. They have superb, state-of-the-art facilities. The athlete dining hall has great food and the academic affairs center has graduate students who are the athletes’ personal tutors. In addition to these great facilities, the academics are of course top-notch. Great combination between academics and athletics. Let us know how it goes.

We are on our last stop, heading home tomorrow! We have had a great trip, although some pretty crappy weather in the Northeast. It has been a huge learning experience for my daughter, dealing with all the different personalities, getting passed from one coach to another, learning to go with the flow (she is a planner)! And a great time for the two of us! We have now looked at over 20 colleges and plan on focusing in on her top choices. I will fill in some other details when I get home, but I highly recommend this sort of trip if at all possible!

Hey Fishy–Be sure to post some thoughts and reflections–either in a few brief notes here or the college reprots. So often those reports are too old…
I know coaches and sports all vary - yet looking forward to your insights.

Hope all went well.

PS–Our student did end up sharing with each coach a bit about our itinerary. Would seem too cagey to not be straightforward. Of the 4 we met, one was really straightforward about the process and we told him how much that meant and how helpful it is compared to the vagueness that be floating out there. Liked seeing the different prorgams and the culture of each.

I am finally getting caught up here at home, so I thought I would post a few more thoughts on our trip. First, we met with coaches from 8 different teams and all of them were very straightforward about what was needed. There were a couple of things said that I am a bit confused about and when the time is right, we will ask for further clarification. And a couple of coaches really went that extra mile, providing lots of great information about the whole recruiting process. My daughter liked all of the schools, but there are definitely a few front runners. And my predications of which schools would get the yay or nay were spot on!

My favorite part of the trip was the down time we spent hanging around the schools and surrounding areas. You can tell alot about a school’s vibe just hanging out. My least favorite part were the tours and info sessions. After the first one, they all sort of blend together, repeating similar information. And I grew quite weary with the rude parents who acted like they were the ones going to college, instead of the kids. If I can offer any advice, I would say skip the info sessions, everything they tell you can be found on the school website. The time is better spent roaming around on your own. More later!
