If a student is covered until a separate, private health insurance plan, is the health insurance premium from AU mandatory?

If a student is covered under a separate, private health insurance plan then that student can waive AU health insurance at https://studentcenter.uhcsr.com/american

Note: Thank you Obamacare. And speaking from personal experience AU health insurance is actually very good. But it’s not worth the $1.8k price tag.

According to AU’s website, if you wish to waive AU health insurance, your current health insurance must cover these requirements:

• Alternate insurance plans must not have a maximum dollar limit that the insurance will pay
for medical claims.
• Alternate insurance plans must not exclude coverage for the following:

• Pre-existing conditions (or the plan must have been in effect long enough that any
waiting period has passed).
• Conditions related to depression, eating disorders, suicide attempts or counseling,
and drug or alcohol counseling/treatment.
• Congenital and non-congenital mental health conditions.

There was an email to the student’s university gmail account about this in the last few days. It gives details, and it links to the waiver. I did the waiver Saturday the 21st, and it was very easy.

As other posters say, you can waive the campus insurance if the student is covered under the parents insurance. My D ended up with the campus insurance during her senior year, and I have to say that compared to other college plans, American’s plan is very good. It covered all of her campus care, specialist referrals, prescriptions. We are just sad that it ends this August and D will have to go into the Affordable Care marketplace (parents live overseas so she can’t go on our plan).
