Health Insurance

My Fiance is movind down to West Va to attend school with me. Her parent's insurance plan, that she's currently insured under, ends this summer on her birthday. She is currently in Minnesota. What's a good health insurance plan for her until we are married Fall '10? I'm currently deployed in Afghanistan so any bit of help I can give her would help. Thanks!

First-Thank you for your service. Second-your fiance may wish to contact the university she will be attending and see if she can sign up now to begin when her other insurance is canceled. If that is not an option, or financially a barrier, you may also check into Blue Cross for independent contractors. Because she is buying it for herself, and not through her business, she may be eligible for coverage under that banner.
I hope this helps-APOL-a mom

I agree with the advice above. Additionally, she should be offered Cobra through her parents’ insurance. This is generally a very expensive (and thus often not practical) option, but if she has any known condition that requires expensive care or medications, it may be worth the price.

If she is going to continue in school, some states now allow students to continue on their parents plan past the 23rd birthday. She might want to double check that. Is she in school in MN oris that her parents home state or both? Secondly, individual (personal) health insurance plans for healthy young adults are relatively inexpensive, especially if she selects a large deductible, but its important that she not have any interruption in coverage from the end of one plan date to the start up of another insurance plan. A large insurance company like BCBS is a good idea so that there are likely to be doctors in network both in the states she’s currently in (where she needs to buy the policy) and in the state she is relocating to. Another possibility is an HMO like Kaiser. Personally I am not a fan of HMO’s, but if you are only needing coverage for a year, its a consideration. YOu could also quietly elope before you deploy and get her on Champus/Tricare! Then have the big wedding when you return from your deployment. She’ll also then have other on-base spouse benefits as well. Just a thought :)

We just got my 22 year old daughter her own Blue Cross policy. It was cheaper than Cobra.
