In 2018 we rented a houseboat with 2 other couples and spend a week exploring Canal Du Midi. One of the unexpected delights was rediscovery of butter, at its best in France on french bread. My husband will still nostalgically say, “remember that butter, with the little salt granules in it?”.
I don’t slather the butter like we did growing up, but it is nice to savor some now and then.
It won’t match the bread/butter in France but I sometimes sprinkle sea salt on my buttered items - only takes a tad to get that salty bite!
Tried a Tik Tok snack idea tonight. Needs some tweaks but you take an unsweetened rice cake, spread some peanuts butter on it, not too thick, melt some dark chocolate, drizzle the glaze over the PB and freeze. (I put them on parchment on a sheet pan until frozen)
You have the sweetness (but not to sweet) of the dark chocolate, the savory salty PB and the crunchy rice cake - all in one bite! I recommend small thinner rice cakes - a regular sized one needs to be cut in half - for me a full one was more than I wanted!
I think that was a treat but a generally healthy treat - and the only way I’ll eat rice cakes!
I went swimming for 30 minutes today, I want to make sure I do at least some form of exercise in the morning. Then I went home cooked up a storm. Maybe I get to garden in the afternoon. Yesterday I dumped a heavy bin of compost, this has been a regular event, a form of exercise, I dump my compost bin out every 2-3 weeks.
I’m quite happy that our small local bulk food store survived the pandemic. (In addition to lots of foods, they have other items too. Recently I purchased laundry detergent sheets, less packaging etc - more a topic for Waste Diversion thread).
When I went to get some chia seeds from the large spice/etc area, I was disappointed to see they were out of black chia seeds. I opted to get white chia seeds instead, for some reason thinking maybe not as nutritiously advantageous. Today I researched a bit and found they a mostly the same, except white a bit pricier.
I made these overnight loaded oats yesterday for breakfasts this week. Took 5 minutes to put together and I put right into jars so I could just grab one in the morning to take to work.
Super delicious. Crunchy. Just a little sweet, but not too sweet. I didn’t have chia seeds so used flax seed. I added some dried cherries and a sprinkle of unsweetened coconut. I also did not have an alternative milk so just used 1% and a drop of vanilla. Apple stayed crunchy and did not brown.
The recipe make 3 jars for me and I think it’s a right-sized serving size. In the morning I add a little more milk and a drizzle of honey.
During Covid isolation we got into the habit of having Jimmy John’s subs delivered once in a while. Usually I get the Little John #4 (turkey, 240 calories). Today hubby went to order and saw “summer wraps are back”. I though a Thai Wrap sounded nice for a bit of a change. It was not on my food app, so I looked online … wow, 720 calories. I decide to have half today, half tomorrow.
It turned out my Little John #4 is recommended as one of the better options. Here’s an interesting links (but I’m quite sure that this group, and everybody, knows some of the info… like the dill pickle side dish choice is better than chocolate chip cookie). Jimmy John's Nutrition Facts: What to Order & Avoid.
My boss loves Jimmy John’s. I think if you order wisely it can be a good option.
I have been picking up lunch recently from a “juice kitchen”. They have a wide variety of items and I’m hoping they’re not too bad for me but the way I look at it it has to be better than other fast casual. Today was a chopped bowl with kale, brown rice, roast squash, avocado, nori and pepitas. Garlic tahini dressing. I estimated using NetDiary in terms of nutrition and calorie count; I think around 400 calories but that will be my big meal of the day. I like these types of meals but I’d never prepare the individual items that would make up the bowl - too much prep work! And then I’d have to eat it all.
The other thing I’ve been doing is using Orgain protein powders. I ordered some from them directly and got some at Costco. They are not too sweet and a quick meal with some fruit/vegetables.
I used to get premade kale salads from the grocery store, thinking it was such a good deal calorie-wise. Turns out the container was supposed to be four servings!
The funniest thing I’ve ever seen (and no one should expect a Cinnabon to be low in calories!) was a box of four Cinnabon’s claiming it was 7 servings. I think they’ve stopped doing that. Eight would have been at least plausible.
I have used olive oil for a number of different purposes. I have used it to fry food, as a salad dressing, and even as a moisturizer for my skin. I find that it is a very versatile product and it has a number of benefits. For instance, olive oil is a healthy alternative to other types of oil, such as vegetable oil. It is also very effective at moisturizing the skin. In addition, olive oil can be used to improve the flavor of food. For instance, I often add olive oil to pasta dish to give it a more authentic flavor.
I remember ONCE eating 2 Cinnabons for dinner. I worked at a place in the mall, and I probably hadn’t eaten much all day. AND, I was 5’8”/@125 pounds.
One of my favorite dishes at CheeseCake Factory is Louisiana Chicken Pasta. I think it has 2200 or so calories. OUCH!
I am not a big sandwich person but sometimes our dept would order JJ because it was close to our campus and they would deliver FAST. I would do their lettuce wrap (so lettuce instead of bread) and then load it up with any veggies I could with whatever protein I ordered. I didn’t miss that bread at all.
I went to Jimmy John’s once and never went back. Unlike the info in the linked article, they refused to “customize” a sandwich. All I asked for, however, was to have mustard on the Little John #4 rather than mayo, since I hate mayo. Nope, no can do. They could give me a mustard packet, but would not put it on my sandwich. For a variety of reasons, I did not want to have to open a packet and try to spread the mustard on once I got to my destination. If a restaurant is that rigid in their policies, I’ll take my business elsewhere. I actually rarely eat subs/sandwiches but my kids like them. It has forever since been a running joke that I will not spend my money at Jimmy Johns so if they want to go there, they need to pay for it themselves.
For lunch (and sometimes breakfast) I often like my version of avocado toast. I smashed 1/2 avocado and hummus together with some chia seeds and everything-bagel seasonings. Then I spread it onto whole grain toast. Today we had some leftover canned refried beans in the fridge, so I used it instead of the hummus. It was small but interesting change. Next time I may switch seasoning to chili powder.
That report did America no good because it gave no reasoning beyond stating “ice cream is better than a bagel” - that teaches us nothing! Was that 1/2 c. ice cream? More? Less?
Go for it. Have ice cream with nuts (and chocolate it said). Have a reasonable serving and make sure the nuts are not coated with sweetner. You’ll get some calcium and protein.
But the bagel? Well if it’s truly multi grain and you’re adding some protein like peanut butter to that, that meal/snack is probably going to keep me satisfied and energized longer than the ice cream.
I’ll settle it by taking BOTH.
Sort of ridiculous that the news program didn’t provide any more detail. All they did was give people reason/excuse to eat ice cream. And probably a big ole bowl of it.
