I'm a freshman at Berkeley and was wondering if majoring in Math and Business Admin(taking finance corses) is a good idea to get into hedgefunds? I'm a bit skeptical on the math though. Is there any better major to go with Bus. that will be good for going into hedge funds?

-Advanced degree
-CFA
-Be genuinely interested, not just about the $$
-Great work experience in finance
-Know the right people

What do you want to do within a hedge fund? Trade? Long/short?

Try to get into Haas your sophomore year. The more successful people in finance, particular if you want to work in front office should be able to do math with ease.

SP1212 - doing a CFA qualification is rather useless unless you wish to enter long sell-side and/or buy-side equity research, not generally beneficial for the hedge fund arena.

Most hedgefunds recruit from IB and sell-side equity research, so having a CFA charter is beneficial. Usually one member of the team has to make up the book, and that person has skills acquired from research.

cbreeze- I thought you could only transfer to haas as a junior?

Math go with Business…Mm.Good Choice

Yes. I meant after your sophomore year.

You need a strong GPA.

Unless you’re looking to be a quant, you shouldn’t even be looking at hedge funds for the next 7-10 years.

But, yeah, do math. No one laughs at math.
