hey guys i got off the waitlist at UNC-CH and now its between UNC and VT. I live OOS (virginia) and was wondering about scholarships and financial aid. any pros about UNC. Money is a HUGE factor right now. im thinking if i get enough money then i can attend. But its a 4 hour drive from here i live. Is it worth it?! also i was considering going to UNC for one year and then transferring to UVa... any suggestions!? Please help!

if you end up at UNC, i can almost guarantee that you won't want to transfer after a year. if money is seriously an issue, like it was for me (i'm in-state, which is why i chose carolina as opposed to a private school), you'll have it rough if you're in a lot of debt after your undergrad degree.

first of all, you have got to make up your mind right now.
Do you want to attend UNC or UVA?
Do you want to go to UNC or VT?
Evidently, money is of concern to you AND YOUR FAMILY.
I'd suggest you to call the office of scholarships and student aid

After you sign in, click students and then financial aid. There you will find what is missing and any other information you need to provide them.
Good luck and godspeed.

eventually i will end up at uva i think. i was thinking about transferring after the first year. but who knows, i visited Tech a couple of times and i dont really like it but i have never visited UNC. I just thought that unc is like UVA but OOS. that was probably the only reason i applied to this school. I signed up for everything but i have to decide pretty quickly. My parents want me to go to VT bc its closer to home and a lot cheaper, i dont know what to do, like i said i have never visited NC.

um, wow. You paid like 65 dollars for the application and spent some time on the application to a school that you ASSUMED it was similar to UVA? That's a clear no no. You have to visit each and every school you applied to. In doing this, you will find out if UNC is right for you.

If you can afford it definately go to UNC!!! Unless you want to try your luck at engineering then VT is ok.

VT is definitely more generous with merit scholarships and such but is a very different kind of school, a school primarily of science and engineering----UNC is a true liberal arts curriculum, so a lot depends on your interest. I would make the effort to visit UNC before saying yes---it is a very different atmosphere than VT---UVA and UNC really only alike in that they carry weight nationally and they have strong academics. The campus atmospheres are quite different and may not appeal to the same people.

nicely put, jimmyduck...nicely put.

yeah.. your right. But im leaning towards business as my major.. maybe i can go to UVa for graduate school bc their #2 in the nation. but do you have to sign up to make a tour? and i found out today that they gave me A LOT of aid, but that might change once they see the 2007 tax returns because my parents made a lot more money during the 2007 year. :( can you visit the college anytime or do you need to make an appointment. I called them and they said they can delay my decision til July 9th!!! so i still have some time!

hey guys im going to visit UNC tomorrow! any basic information i need to know (housing, student life, food, transportation, etc.) i was wondering if they run buses to or near virginia! any advice will be greatly appreciated :)

The first thing you need to do is change your state of mind. I realize that you have a possible financial situation and that this may greatly influence your decision. That said, you should never go into college with idea of transferring before you even get there.
VT, UVA, and UNC are all VERY different schools. Also, transferring is not an easy task- you may not get into the school, you may find it very hard to leave friends, and familiarity, etc...
Don't dismiss UNC or VT because they aren't UVA. Give them a chance. UVA and UNC are on equal terms as regards academic standards and reputation.

Things you might not have thought about specific to UNC are:
-an incredible basketball season (especially this comming 2008-2009)
-a beautiful college town and campus
-a prestigious Business School (Kenan-Flagler) of which I am a part of
-a very united campus life

Good Luck

there is an oss group that has postings for students travelling home. my guess is that there are lots of virginians. you can help with gas.
also airtran is pretty cheap. there are buses but the bus depot is prob in durham or pittsboro but don't think carrboro. however the triangle transit which serves raleigh, durham and chapel hill (and the airport) is extensive and very cheap......probably runs to the bus terminal.

ok since i dont know which college i will be attending til i get my fianancial aid (july 7) is it ok if i start completing housing applications, course sign ups, orientation? or is that considered double enrolling? UNC extended my decision til july 9th. can anyone help me with the beginning stuff(aka where everything is) i am really new to UNC. ahhh i feel like i am so far behind in everything!

housing requires a deposit---can't enroll until you go to orientation, which will be after july 7----you can sign up for orientation after you send in your deposit to UNC----sorry you may have to be on hold until you decide

Do you think that this will hold me back into getting the classes I want and the housing I want? I feel like I am the last one who will accept UNC spot if I do get enough financial aid :(

uvawhoo check out facebook...theres a lot of pics for UNC and check out theu.com lotts of videos of the school...but best thing would b go to the school...i havent visited the school either but ive seen so many pics and videos that i love wat ive seen so far...n the people r soooo amazing ive been in contact with sooooo much help through facebook and collegeconfidential..from unc students..THERE THE BEST they offered so much helpful advice

o n for cheap airline tics try studentuniverse.com

gator2008 i just went to UNC last thursday, It was a 4 hour drive but it wasnt that bad, but the campus is nice, there were constructions going on. I just want to know about how my late response will affect sign ups for housing orientation and classes... oh i need a roommate also

Housing probably won't be too bad. You'll be in the same boat as everyone else for classes because they save a certain number of spots in each class for each CTOPS session.

there is a site on the housing dept site where you can find roommates I believe.....remember to address the obvious....bedtimes, mornings, messiness, drinking and girls/guys
