Hey guys, I’m currently debating between a few schools. I’m an advertising major but might go into marketing and I’m from Chicago. I didn’t do the best in high school (for reference lol) and I’m first-generation. Michigan State University is my top and they have a really good advertising program but the out of state cost is insane! With my scholarship, aid and grant I still would be paying almost $40k for a year! (tuition + board + food) Other schools I am considering is University of Iowa where I still would be paying $37K but I am not directly admitted to the college of business and they don’t have an advertising major. I’m also considering St. John’s but it’s not as highly rated and I would still be paying $36k. Being in debt for the rest of my life is a scary thought! Which do you think I should choose? I’m leaning towards MSU and community college isn’t an option for me.
What can/will your family pay for college each year?
My parents are planning on taking out loans for the majority of the cost.
None of these are affordable. If your parents and/or you are having to take out massive amounts of debt to pay tuition, you can’t afford them, and you shouldn’t be going there. It’s that simple. Adding up the costs, you’d be graduating with around $100,000 in debt. That kind of debt would crush you. Were you accepted into any in-state options? That’s the direction you really should be headed. Right now, it’s not the time to go somewhere exotic. The economy is in a major recession, and a job loss from a parent would make these colleges unaffordable VERY quickly. You really need to stick with something you can afford even if it means going to community college for a year or two.
I agree about the affordability being necessary. I have heard some colleges (maybe even one of your in-state universities) have re-opened applications. This may be something to consider.
