<p>I know that on the FAFSA, if your bank balance or assets are worth less than $50,000 you can put $0 in the box but what about the CSS Profile?</p>

<p>Both FAFSA and CSS want the actual amount. I believe when FAFSA does their internal formula to calculate the EFC, they subtract 40K from the amount and dont touch that.</p>

<p>Yes, they ask for actual amounts as of the day you fill out the form.</p>
<p>To add to the above comment, a certain amount of parent assets are considered to be needed to be set aside for family emergency purposes, and that is not expected to be used for college. That averages out to about $40,000, but could be $50,000 depending upon age, etc.</p>
