Help deciding between USNA and USAFA

I've been weighing the negavites and postives of each choice, and it has basically come down to my opportunities during the actual service years.

I'm 6'5, so I'm very limited as to what planes I could fly in the Air Force, if I'd be able to fly at all. Do you guys know how far this limitation would be?

That also limits me basically to surface warfare in the Navy, and when I toured a destroyer earlier this year I noticed there wasn't a lot of headroom for me. Would this be a problem for me in the other types of vessels? I've also had the feeling that surface warfare may get tedious after 2-3 months. You're staying on the same boat with the same people for a long period of time, and when you do visit foreign ports the people may not be hospitable to Americans. Can you guys show me the flaws in this thinking, and some of the brighter sides of this path?

I'm going to base my decision on what I feel would be a better career for me. (I think USNA is the better college if the career is ignored.)

For aviators, height restrictions are 62" to 78" (5' 2" to 6' 6") for both Navy and Air Force. You're good, but just barely.

Well, that's true for SWO and Subs, too. Years of boredom punctuated by seconds of sheer excitement/terror. Probably true for most of the military, actually.

SHIP! It's a SHIP! Boats are either submarines or small craft carried on SHIPS! (Minor pet peave. ;) )

In my experience, our sailors give the locals more problems than the other way around. Some stupid kids just don't seem to know how to drink responsibly.

You have to take the good with the bad. All jobs will have some excitement and some boredom. It's just the way it is. All will give you good experience.

Maybe we can start here: If you LEFT the Service, what would you want to do?

If I left, I'd probably be working as an engineer in the aerospace industry. I really enjoy engineering, which is why I'm looking forward to next year.

Is/was your service choice surface warfare? If so, do you enjoy it more than you would expect? Also, was headroom an issue on most ships?

lol, me and you both.

About height restrictions for aviation: While you technically fall within the height limits for aviation, you may be limited to only certain airframes (i.e. transports [USAF] and P-3 or E/C-2 [Navy]). This is because of the ejection seats in fighters and bombers; long legs could result in very serious injuries in the event of ejections. So ejection seat aircraft have their own certain limits for height.

Oh, wow. I hadn't thought of that. Bummer!

Well, in that case I would .....

C'mon Zaphod.... You can say it....

GRRRRRR.......

LEAN AIR......

UURRRGGG!!!!!

FORCE!!!

ACK!

Is/was your service choice surface warfare?

Yep, but not by choice. I was having so much fun dreaming about being a Submariner that failed to PAY ATTENTION IN CLASS and STUDY so I would get accepted into Nuclear Power School.

Learn the lesson, people! Getting THAT thin little letter is worse than getting one now!

Nope. Hated it, but don't let MY experience affect YOURS. I made my bed and had to sleep in it. I also know several folks who LOVE Surface Warfare.

Not too bad, although you get used to ducking through watertight doors and stepping over threasholds REALLY quick. I don't remember ever having seriously cracked the ol' noggin on any valves or bulkheads.

BTW, I'm 6' 3".

You don't want to be an engineer, trust me. Engineering is boring.

I enjoy it, although I'm not an engineer in the pure sense.

I guess there are some cool ways to be an engineer. I've decided though that I'll be pretty bored unless my life and the future of my country is in my hands. This could explain my decision to attend USAFA.

Well theoretically, every single person that works for the government or military is responsible for the future of this nation. Keep that and your mission in mind: BEAT CHINA! (they have almost twice the military manpower than the US).
