Help decode EFC number.

Got EDC = 062029 when submitted. When I google, it says it has to below 5500. I don’t think I am so above in income …

Your EFC has to be below 5500 to receive the Pell Grant.

Your EFC is 62k lol. Your income is probably above 100k or you have a bunch of assets. Is this true?

I don’t understand your question. If you have an EFC of 062029, your Expected Family Contribution for the year would be $62,029.

What is the family income? This says that you have an EFC of $62,029

You posted this on your last thread:

You already know your income is high, and that your EFC would reflect that. Why would you expect it to be below $5500 (the max EFC to get a Pell Grant)?

I know, income is high and I wasn’t expecting grant. However, everyone has suggested me to apply css and fafsa. So I did, and I am wondering if I am wasting time and application fees to the 18 colleges i have to apply

18 colleges??? Really???

How much can your parents pay each year for 4 years? Then, don’t apply to schools that are above that after checking the net price calculator.

Two reasons why high (but not absurdly wealthy) families should file: 1. for some schools they’re necessary for merit awards, 2. for some schools, if you don’t file before your first year you are not eligible for aid in future years which could be important if your family income drops drastically.

It’s also my understanding that many schools which are need-aware for international students require them to file when they apply in order to be eligible for aid in the future.

So if any of these things apply to you, or might apply to you, it’s worthwhile to file now.

@Sanjeevj

Well, if your EFC is that high AND your family can pay it without extensive debt then you are not wasting your time.

If your EFC is that high AND those 18 colleges are schools with a cost of attendance at $60,000/year or higher AND your family can’t afford it then yes, you have wasted your time.

Apply also to schools you can afford.

For some reason I read the title as “decode EFC murder.” I guess I’ve been watching too many that crime shows over break.

You should still file FAFSA (and CSS for schools that require it). Sometimes to qualify for merit, it’s necessary. Check with each school to see if you need to send it.

Fafsa is free and is necessary to qualify for the 5.5k Student Loan. If your parents can pay for college off inxome/sacings without your taking a loan, you don’t need to fill it out.
You can complete it each year.

Run the NPC : at some colleges (hyp, Williams?) that do not package loans for all, a 62efc with a coa 68k would result in a * small* award. But mostly… Not.

Check, school by school, whether they require you to file if you’re only applying for merit, not need based aid.
If they don’t, don’t fill out fafsa /css.

Only run the NPC for HYP and places like Williams if you ar e APPLYING to those schools. Otherwise you might get the very false impression that their generous aid is what you would get at other schools.

Run the NPCs at schools that you plan to apply to.
