I was wondering how U of Chicago defines "essay." I am choosing the "he'lade" question...I think it's number 3 or 4, do you think it would be acceptable to include dialogue and write it more like a story (in the first person)?? Ah! Help!

Yeah, sure. Just a couple lines, though. Write it in first person if you want.

i get the feeling chicago defines "essay" very loosely - most likely however you define it. by that i mean: write whatever the hell you want (make it good).

Phooey, I thought this would be an IB thread. The term "Extended Essay" still sends a shudder up my spine.

Colleges tend to take the term "essay" loosely, as tennisdude said. A Chicago '09 EA applicant wrote hers as a dialogue between Socrates and Shakespeare...it definitely made for an interesting essay.

Remember that colleges use essays to gauge your personality, not to see how well you can write a 5 paragraph essay. Be creative and have fun with the topic.

^ Okay, thanks guys! I got it!

oh, during my interview, when my interviewer was giving me application tips or whatever, she said, "don't be afraid to make the essays your own." i think that's telling.

gota love chicago :-)

many people I know have turned their uncommon essays into short stories and the like-- that's not discouraged for a Chicago essay, though I'd be hesitant to say that other schools would enjoy it as much.
