Help Find a College - Part 2

I don’t know. Maybe it is personnel in general rather than full time faculty.

20 or 21 or even 23-it is unacceptable for the reasons I’ve stated. The university is determined to load the place with more students while unwilling to spend a dime on more resources and staff. There are apparently waiting lists for classes and lines and long delays for advising. It is busting at the seams.

I asked a friend to do some research about the ratios. She reported back that these ratings differ from others in key ways. First, they use Full Time Equivalents for both staff and faculty rather than equating full and part timers. Second, they include only active faculty members who teach. They do not include research staff/faculty who don’t have teaching responsibilities and they don’t include emeritus faculty who don’t teach.

Considering this fact, the Stony Brook and Binghamton ratios make a little more sense. Stony Brook probably has more part time students so the conversion to FTE reduces the total number of students for SB more than for Binghamton. Binghamton may have more faculty members who don’t teach or who are Emeritus. Removing them from the count probably reduces the total number of faculty for Binghamton more than for SB.

Universities apparently have to sign off on the numbers used by this rating system-unlike for the others. Thus the universities apparently have provided validation for the numbers used whereas some of the other systems apparently use the CDS numbers-which the universities have submitted but not for the expressed purpose of the ratings.

Binghamton ratios look more like the nonflagship schools in states that have flagships. They look very dissimilar to most of the flagships.

If the ratios are correct, they are stunning. They also point to a big problem.

She’s on the board! Ursinus EA w/$35K Zacharias Scholarship. That’s their highest offering (at least according to their website). Good start!

Next up will be Dickinson and Clark sometime in February.

Awesome news. Go celebrate.

@lexluthor5 Did you visit Ursinus?

No, actually no communication with Ursinus whatsoever other than registering on their website and submitting the application. Hopefully a good sign that she’ll do well with her applications at the schools and likes more.

We are in B+ student land and visited many schools in this category. It is great news and a lot of money but the campus needs a real make-over. I worry when you actually visit the reaction will be negative.

What does she want to study?

I’ve heard that from at least someone else, yes. It’s lower down on her list, I think it’s very unlikely she’ll wind up going there.

My Ds were interested in Ursinus until we visited…it does give a run-down vibe, and the dorms are very cinder-blocky. Obviously that doesn’t have anything to do with the quality of the education, and the people we met there were lovely.

@lexluthor5 Congrats! My kid visited Ursinus at the recommendation the parent of a current student, and had a good experience there. Yes, the facilities weren’t up to those of some other schools he visited in the area, but neither he nor my husband seemed to think anything was problematic. It hasn’t made his final cut for other reasons (strengths in his particular interests), but we’ve heard great things from the current parent we know.

This has been such an interesting and helpful thread.

Another one in. She was accepted to Clark yesterday with the $20K/year Traina Scholarship. Still applying for Leep Scholarship there too.

Admissions person who she had communicated with previously actually called the night before the official email and let her know. Nice touch.

There are other schools higher on her list that she’s still going to be waiting on for a while yet, but at least, so far, the first 2 are very positive and are validating the process.

Next up will probably be Dickinson in early February. That’s very high on her list, so hopefully, she gets something good on the board from them and that will really take some pressure off.

I thought that I’ve seen some posts somewhere about Grinnell and Mac sometimes sending acceptance notifications much earlier than the stated deadlines. Wonder if she might hear from someone unexpectedly early?

Back again.

Accepted EA to Dickinson with John Dickinson Scholarship of $20K/year (their highest offer). So far 3 for 3 with highest offers. This one eliminates all of the safety schools unless someone really surprises with aid. She wound up not applying for the Clark LEEP scholarship as she just couldn’t get past the Worcester location. It would have killed me if she was awarded that and didn’t go there anyhow.

Long wait for the rest at this point.

I appreciate everyone who has replied to this and my previous threads. The advice here has been invaluable.

That’s great news.

I just read this whole thread. You are following a very similar path as we did with our S last year. Hunting for the best combination of Merit Aid combined with the best school that is the best fit socially is a big challenge. You have taken the right approach, and your D should have many lovely options when the dust settles.

Denison ended up being #2 for our S, with Dickinson probably #3.

Good luck to your D. She (and you) have worked hard, and I am sure will be rewarded in the end.

@ColdinMinny What ended up being #1?

My S chose Trinity University in San Antonio. Terrific scholarship, fantastic facilities, large endowment, and he really clicked with his CS professors. He is really enjoying it, and does not miss our weather at all. Has been wearing shorts the whole school year!

Just wanted to congratulate @lexluthor5 on your D’s acceptances. It sure does take some of the stress off the whole process. I’m looking forward to hear what else shakes out.

And @ColdinMinny I recently hired a recent graduate from Trinity in San Antonio. She’s been with me for about 6 months and she fantastic. By far and away one of the best, smartest and brightest folks I’ve had work for me in the last 15 years.

@Kitzka1 That is such a nice compliment. Hard to make sweeping generalizations, but I have sure liked my interactions with the students at Trinity, and I have been on the campus now quite a bit.
