Thanks so much this was really helpful! But say I am being recruited by some top 50 d1 schools should I look pro or just let that come to me?

HHS2013,

Very rarely would I advise someone to sit back and let something come to them in the recruiting process. I have very little pro scout experience, as that was never a consideration for us. Education then baseball are my olderst son’s priorities. If you are as good of a student as your GPA indicates, you may want to go to college and then try to get drafted after your junior year. That seems to be a popular path these days.

In the case of elite D1 schools, you are competing for spots that are highly coveted by incoming freshmen, JUCO transfers, other D1transfers, and walk-ons. In the case of the JUCOs and transfers, they already have at least a year of college baseball under their belt. Also, in most of these cases the school has the leverage and they are not going to be generous with scholarship dollars. My son was recruited by a top 5 D1 baseball school, and he would have gotten academic money only, becasue they had no athletic scholarship $ left. The down side is that he probably would not have seen actual playing time until his junior year. He decided against this situation.

Best of luck and let us know if you have any further questions.

Hey I was wondering what are some of the better showcases? I’ve been getting tons of invites and I don’t know which ones to choose!

HHS2013,

You’ll find almost all travel coaches, college coaches, and pro scouts are familiar with Perfect Game. What showcase events do you have questions on?

Also, I’m not sure what you mean by better showcases. My definitiion of “better” would showases with college coaches representing colleges my son is interested in attending. Your definition may the number of pro scouts that attend. We found Perfect Game World Wood Bat 18U and PG Jupiter were well attended by professional scouts, as well as college coaches. For PG 17U World Wood Bat it was many more college coaches than pro scouts.

My opinion of these PG events is that they are very good for a couple reasons. First, you get a PG rating and a write up by a professional PG scout that gets entered into a PG database. College coaches and pro scouts have access to that database and can review that write up. Also there are cross-checkers that will check that review and add anything else that needs to be added. This is a good thing, because not every college coach or pro scout can see you in person, but they can always access your information. Second, these events are well attended by college coaches and pro scouts. In a lot of cases they serve as a “laboratory” where coaches and scouts can see a player against some of the best competition not at a high school where a kid hits .600 or strikes out 15 a game against other weaker high school competition. Lastly, it serves as an introduction for most of these coaches and scouts to the players. Most players will tell the coaches or scouts their schedule, and they can watch them play and make the decision to pursue the player or not.

Thanks that helps alot! I’ll focus mre on seperating them into who is actually coming to them and who I’m interested in!
