Help!! Foreign Tax exemptions.

My Mom and Dad file foreign tax returns (China), me and my little sister are dependents:(. When we were completing FAFSA, we didn’t know what to input for exemption. In China people start paying income taxes starting from a $538 income(
Personal income tax threshold), and there are different rates after that (Excess progressive tax rates). Is the exemption 4*$538? The system only allows to input two numbers, it can’t be left blank, plus I suspect 0 is a code for a line in one of the eligible tax forms (please tell me if I’m wrong)…

Please help me out!!!

are your parents us citizes/permanent residents? If yes, they would be expected tofile US tax returns also

No, they are Chinese residents

When you complete the FAFSA, it is OK to leave a line blank, or to enter a 0 if your national tax forms don’t have an equivalent.

Thank you for replying, happymomof1!
I left it blank, but the form showed ‘error’. The system says if you filed 2016 taxes then you have to say how much exemptions you claimed…I’ll just enter 0 then.

You and your sister are U.S. citizens? You all live in China?

I think the questions about exemptions refer to US tax return. If your parents filed a foreign tax return those questions would not apply.

Was there an option to list foreign tax return?

Well, there’s no option for foreign tax return, so I just left it blank…

Sorry, I meant entered 0 :stuck_out_tongue:
