HELP, I broke SAT testing integrity; what happens now?

I know Ferpa and I don’t see in it or CB’s description that it “requires the college board to divulge my misconduct to essentially all schools…”

Im curious because Ferpa being a genuine law doesn’t mean no prank. Ferpa does not mandate this be disclosed to colleges. I’m abbreviating my comments.

Guys I didn’t cheat, I broke test integrity by making a google document that had articles from the sat on it and sharing it with others.

You’re splitting hairs.

Cheating is sharing or taking information that will or could be tested.

You shared.

No, it didn’t increase your score. That doesn’t mean you didn’t cheat.

Well, if they can identify you through reddit (which shouldn’t be likely unless you disclosed any personal info about yourself), your scores will be cancelled. I think that’s about it. Since they’ve already identified you (seeing that you got an email from them), your parents will know anyway because scores will be cancelled. While it is against the terms you agreed to, this isn’t something major like plagiarism during the test or hardcore cheating; it’s just breaking the terms. As such, I think your future will be safe as long as you take another test and show that you’ve learned not to do it again.

Here are the terms and conditions of SAT registration in case you want to see them (there was nothing about reporting misconduct to colleges in here): https://nsat.collegeboard.org/satweb/common/satreg/pdf/SATRegistrationTermsAndConditions.pdf

But you should probably tell your parents.

You broke your own integrity. No wording gets around that.

Ferpa doesn’t mandate this. And CB’s new security measures allow they may report to law enforcement. They don’t say colleges and they sure don’t put this on Ferpa.

Technically, CB isn’t an educational institution, not subject to Ferpa. Their attempt to conform is voluntary.

If they cancel my scores that would be bad but not as bad as colleges finding out about my misconduct!!! I understand what I did was very wrong and stupid and I will NEVER EVER even think about doing something like this again but Im more worried about colleges finding out because then this will ruin all of my hopes, dreams and LIFE!

To update you guys I emailed the CB representative who emailed me, and i formally apologized and told him that i would contact the college board tomorrow. he emailed my school email so i guess that they already know who i am and that there was no point in hiding so i should just do the right thing and own up to what i did. I was also nervous and couldn’t take the stress of waiting untill tomorrow. i really wish i hadnt done this!!

@lookingforward what do u suggest i do? I was also skeptical after the research i did, but i guessed it was in my best interest to believe the email since im not really in the position to try to gain some leverage or try to question them.

Now you’re saying he had a legit collegeboard address? How did he have your hs email- you used it on Reddit or used your real name or? Doesn’t this smell funny?

I am in no way liking what you did.

Your life will not be ruined. In this moment it may feel that way, but as I see it, you have already begun to learn from the experience. These tests cause such angst, it is human nature to want to talk about the experience with others. You took it too far and violated the rules, but people often act our of character when they are stressed to the max. I, for one, don’t think clearly when I am under a high amount of stress. Hang in there.

Why the he!! did you do that Reddit stunt? What did you stand to gain? Are you using your real name on the things? I see you’re using your initials here, not too smart.

You broke the rules, for no reason?

@K.T.W 22’

I made an account just to tell you that as a frequent user of reddit and on SAT, we have had problems with numerous middle-aged college drop outs who scour threads looking for users like you to ruin their lives;reporting emails and such to collegeboard.
Now, there is only one or two guys that do it and go under different usernames as they usually get banned after one comment, however, if you posted an email; it was most likely reported (NEVER GIVE OUT PERSONAL INFORMATION)

If your email is not connected to your collegeboard account or evidence is not there; it is possible to fight your case. You can say someone posted your email on their account and that you had no involvement (legit)
The CollegeBoard is not able to do this to users cheating as anyone could just post someone else’s email and pretend to be them, as such, you need to address this as what happened.

The other thing, which is EXTREMELY likely, is that this was a scare email. If they did not use your NAME and SCHOOL, then it is 100% a scare email as collegeboard would have contacted you officially by name/school. There ARE people out there online who are so insecure about their own life they resort to this for other kids.

The email recipient was deleted per moderator, so it’s safe to assume it wasn’t official (official would mean there’s no reason to delete as it’s not personal - but public information)

I was not able to read the email since it was deleted as well [would be nice if you posted it word for word]

Please do not do anything rash such as ‘confessing’ to something there is no evidence you did (claim impersonation)

I am not excusing how stupid of an idea this was by-the-way.

@rofikicafe thanks for the moral support! and @lookingforward here is how i think it happened. On reddit, which is basically like college confidential in that its anonymous and people can post about whatever in certain communities. The community i was in was called “SAT” and basically people post about standardized testing on it. in that community I made this post essentially telling people to direct message me their gmails and that ill share a google document with them so that we can place info we remember from the test on it and basically use it to study. a bunch of people messaged me and i emailed them, i think one of the people who i shared it with reported it to the testing integrity hotline and shared the document with them. The testing integrity people probably then go the document, saw who the owner is (me) and contacted me. The way they got my school email is because my school email is through gmail and that is what i used to share the document with everyone. so yes i know how stupid it was of me to do and just dumb, i fully regret what i did.

Now it is all smelling a bit like a fairy story, I have a question about google docs, can you share google docs anonymously?

If you create a Google doc with a Gmail attached to your real name, especially if the Gmail is the one used for your school, people can absolutely see that you, specifically, created the document. Google Drive is not anonymous if you’re signed in.

Hoo Boy.
Talk to your parents.
Are you certain you emailed back to a legit CB address, legit person working on test integrity issues?

Btw, my own integrity makes me uncomfortable discussing this.

Honestly, I would talk to parents tonight.

And to someone at school tomorrow before doing anything else. Even if school hasn’t started yet, someone will be in guidance.

Quit emailing random people without your parents’ permission. You’re going to have to tell them eventually, and it’s better to do it now before you do something that can’t be undone – if you haven’t already.

Well I’ve got some good news guys. Turns out the guy who emailed me was just another kid that I shared the document with and it was a prank. I still think what I did was really stupid but I got a good lesson out of it- don’t publicly share your information with strangers on the internet. This prank was so very scary and so realistic that I honestly will never ever discuss another question on any standardized exam or breach testing integrity, nevertheless, try to recreate an entire SAT test. I’m just grateful that this wasn’t real and I really appreciated everyone’s help, so thank you all and I guess I learned my lesson. (P.s sorry for wasting your time).

Um, ya great you learned a lesson about online security.

However, I hope you also learned a lesson about honesty, honor, and following the rules…rules that are there, in this case, to protect the integrity of an important test.

Are you serious? Who the heck would do that to someone? This could have had serious consequences on someone more fragile’s life. So disturbing.
