HELP, I broke SAT testing integrity; what happens now?

Ok so I took the August SAT and it was my first real SAT (I took the PSAT before twice) and that was all good except when I got home. I went on Reddit (I know big mistake) and I was new there and everyone was talking about the test so I did the STUPIDEST THING EVER! I tried to get a bunch of users to come together on google docs and try to remember as many questions as we can from the recent test. It was a practical failure, we were only able to find a few of the articles that the test used in the reading section from their original sources. A few hours later I receive an email from this guy from the college board saying this and I quote:

MODERATOR’S NOTE:
Email deleted. Per Terms of Service, posting emails is prohibited.

Anyways now im really scared and I regret what i did, I admit it was so stupid and immature! I dont even know why i did it? But now im really scared that colleges will now I did this and that my scores will be canceled. However, I am more worried that colleges will find out about my misconduct and that my life will be ruined because of a stupid, dumb and irresponsible thing that I chose to do. I know that if you cheat on the SAT and are caught they take your test away and cancel your scores but they DO NOT TELL COLLEGES, you pay a fee and are allowed to retest another time. so what will happen in my situation, please help im scared!

Do as they say. Contact College Board and try to explain.

But don’t use the word “allegedly.” What you did was absolutely against the rules.

@K.T.W 22’ I dont know what reddit is so maybe this is a dumb question but how on earth does the college board even know who you are?

The email essentially said and im not quoting: that this incident is under investigation and that they are identifying my college board profile and that my scores will shortly be invalidated and that I breached federal law requiring all standardized testing to be secure and that under FERPA act of 1974 it requires the college board to divulge my misconduct to essentially all schools across the U.S and abroad and that they cant guarantee that colleges wont know about this and/or if this will affect my college admission decisions. They also reccomend that I contact the college board so that I can tell them more about the situation so that they can make a decision on the fate of my test scores and academic futture.

sorry about that, i didnt know and I fixed it, thank u.

Im guessing someone tipped them off.

I am sorry you have to deal with this now, but what was your reason to want to do that? I can see if you wanted validation on a particular question, but I’d think it would be much better to just ask a classmate that you know took the test. It’s my understanding that the SAT is administered overseas using some of the same articles on a later date, so posting entire articles is really a breach of the test security and it only serves to hurt your chances of getting into a college because you are giving other students an edge.

now that i am reading the college board rules, it looks like you are not even supposed to discuss a question. Have you spoken to your parents about this?

This seems above and beyond a little snarking on reddit. Have you told your parents?

No and I am afraid to, I plan on contacting the college board tomorrow since today is Sunday and they are not available. I completely deleted everything the second I received the email and I don’t think anyone has any copies of the document since it was essentially useless in it’s current form.

Your parents are your biggest advocates. Keeping them in the dark is not only unfair to them, it’s also not in your best interests.

Other than the college board, anyone with a screenshot, anyone on the reddit, anyone on your google docs share? You need to tell your parents, you might want legal representation.

You can believe that college board took a screen shot before notifying anyone of the issue.

They deal with this issue all the time… it’s not their first rodeo.

I definitely think you need to sit and talk with your parents about this. I am sure they will be really, really upset that you are in this trouble now, but I am sure they will want to help you figure it out. Based on what you said the email stated, I would think that you might want legal representation as well. You sound really scared and you need your parents right now.

Serious question: how do you know the email wasn’t a prank? I know you’re a nervous kid but Ferpa?

Talk to your parents. They need to know what’s going on, so that they can support you in what happens next. You made a mistake, and it may impact your future. What is important is to be honest from here on out, especially with yourself. Are you scared because you got caught? Would you still be on google docs looking for answers if you hadn’t received that email? If you learn whatever lesson is meant to be learned in this situation, you will grow as a human being. People make mistakes, It’s how you deal with those mistakes that reveals your true character.

It is an actual law and this email wasnt a prank. Google FERPA act of 1974.

I think ill talk to my parents after I call the college board tomorrow, i dont want them finding out if i can resolve this issue on my own.

Don’t talk to anyone without alerting your parents. Your call is going to be recorded and your parents can’t help much if you formally admit to cheating.

“I think ill talk to my parents after I call the college board tomorrow, i dont want them finding out if i can resolve this issue on my own.”

What if you make it worse on your own. You mentioned Federal Law. Talk to your parents
