I am a senior in high school and since I have been in America for few months, I don’t really know how to apply on the common app. I am planning to apply to colleges by my own(no help from a college adviser) and I don’t know where to begin. Do you guys think that applying for college by my own is a bad idea?
You can get help out here. Are you an American citizen or permanent resident? Have you taken the ACT or SAT? Are you considering local colleges? What is your financial situation?
I am a permanent resident and Yes, I have taken the SAT. I have a good score on the SAT and a good GPA, good class rank and I don’t have a good income.
The common app is fairly easy to complete, it’s mostly basic information about you and your family, self-reporting AP and other test scores and your essay. Once you add your colleges to the common app, it will let you know if you need additional things like school-specific essays. You should speak to your school guidance counselor because they will write a letter or recommendation and they may be able to help you find a teacher or two who can also write letters for you. Good luck!
Agree that you should make an appointment with your school guidance counselor as a starting point. The hard part is making up an appropriate list of affordable schools you can probably get admitted to. The app itself isn’t that challenging, although you need to meetbthe deadlines.
My 17 year old son has taught me that you can learn anything you need to know from a youtube video. Google “video filling out common ap” and you will be able to watch numerous videos walking you through the process. That will help you with the actual application. As the others have said, meet with your school guidance counselor to get as much help as you can.
What state do you live in? What classes are you taking? What’s your SAT score? What colleges are you aiming for?
Do your state colleges use the CommonApp? If not, hurry to apply, especially since Honors College applications deadlines + scholarship deadlines may well be November 1st.
