I started learning to drive about five days ago, and I'm still afraid to go on the road. All I am capable of doing is cruising around the (deserted) neighborhood. I freak out when I see another car coming. Is this normal? What can I do to conquer my fear? Thanks!

That’s normal! I was terrified at the mere sight of another car when I was first learning too.

You need to find a deserted place- like your neighborhood, or a big parking lot- where you can perfect basic driving skills. Once you’re comfortable there, try one of the lesser busy roads in your town at an off time, during the work day or very early in the morning. (If you live in a city, definitely do not start out there, go into a local suburb or something.) There, you can get a basic feel for a real road, and once you’re comfortable with that, then you can try the more busy roads or drive during rush hour, and even try the highway.

The MOST important thing in driving is to stay calm and not panic- the calmer you are, the better your driving will be!

Oh, I hate parallel parking too.

I tailgate people like you for fun.

Lol not really. Driving is all about practice, and everyone goes through a phase of fearing for their lives / car (they should be going through that phase every time they get behind the wheel, but whatever). You’ll get comfortable soon enough. It’s all about keeping a calm, clear head.

Driving is all about getting experience. You’re gonna make stupid mistakes when your on the road, but you’ll realize it was a mistake and won’t do it again. It’s just like anything, you get better as you go.
