Help! LAC Options/Chances International Relations

Hi! I'm going to be applying to colleges this fall, and right now I'm looking at Middlebury, Macalaster, St.Olaf, Grinnell, and American. I'm planning on majoring in International Relations. I really want to work for an NGO later on in life hopefully focused on aiding young women or would love to be a teacher. I have a 4.63 GPA and currently have a 28 on my ACT. But I am part of the IB program so I'm not sure if that's REALLY going to help me. I've been interning at the museum of contemporary art Chicago for 2 years, and have been an intern at the art institute of chicago for 2 years (simulatanously). I love slam poetry and I am going to be captain this year! I'm Indian as well. I also have been singing and playing piano for 7 years; at school, church etc. I'm also going to be part of National Honor Society this year. The characteristics that matter the most to me are community, the international relations program, diversity, and cost. I've always had a very close relationship with my teachers so that's really important too. I'm most comfortable when I feel like I have a PLACE, and I enjoy being around those who are humble and down to earth.

Could you guys help me, in telling me what my chances are for these colleges, and what other schools I should look at? That are either reach schools or match schools! That would be great. (Also your opinions of these schools)

First, clarify your financial situation. Tuition etc for private LACs is fairly consistent. If you need financial aid it makes a big difference whether you will you qualify for need based aid or if you require merit aid. Not clear if you are an American or Indian national. That would impact aid as well. Also, are you male or female?

Second, is your 4.63 GPA out of 4.0? If not could you translate it to 4.0? Scores are not necessarily deal breakers for LACs, but 28 is a bit on the low side for some of the more selective. Perhaps you should try the SATs (I & II) as well.

An IB diploma will help you as will your ECs. Think about how to present your interests in your application. Submit samples of your poetry, perhaps a music performance supplement, even if your intended major is in another direction.

I’m Indian as in from India (but I have dual citizenship). My family makes about 50,000 a year and I’m an only child, and a female. I’m currently on a 5.0 scale and next year will be on a 6.0 scale.

I have a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale. Also what is your opinon on schools such as Oberlin, Middlebury (Posse schools) versus the Questbridge program?

If you are from Chicago…Posse choices include Agnes Scott, Cornell U., Denison, Connecticut, Depauw, Middlebury, Oberlin, Pomona, St. Olaf, Trinity, and UW-Madison.

Questbridge is a more flexible program with more options and better partner schools. However, none of the schools you are considering are partner colleges, and a 28 on the ACT would put you in the lower end of most of the liberal art colleges that QuestBridge has, so it’s up to you to evaluate it.

Holy Cross-very good school near Boston.

28 ACT is pretty low for most of those schools. IB is a good thing, though.
