Hey guys! It has been quite a while since I posted on college confidential so I hope I am posting this in the right forum. Anyway, I have a conundrum about recommendation letters. I am a junior, so i am beginning to think about who I want to write my recommendation letters. I was thinking about asking my math teacher. Math is a subject that I am very bad at and I am taking a basic Algebra 2 class. While my grade isn't high (a B-, my lowest grade). I work hard and participate in class and the teacher really likes me, and I know she would write me a good letter of recommendation. Would a letter of recommendation about what a hard worker I am help me in the college admissions process? Should I only ask for letters of recommendation from my AP teachers? (I'm taking AP Lang and Comp, AP 3D Art and AP Psych). Thank you so much, I really appreciate it!

bump…please help!

I say take what you can from the ones who are willing to write a letter. I had my heart set on a particular teacher writing mine & he jerked me around by procrastinating. I ended up asking two other teachers and they wrote them right away. Try everyone you can. Someone you least expect may provide you with a killer letter.

Adcoms have said in info sessions that your letters of rec shouldn’t necessarily be from a teacher where you have the highest grades. It should be from a teacher who knows you well and who you know will write you a good rec. Hope this helps! :)

Ask the teachers that know you the best and see you in the most positive light. This doesn’t necessarily mean ask the teachers from classes you had the highest grades in. It’s important that the teacher sees you as both intelligent and hard working.

Make the judgement call based on the vibe the teacher gives off about their opinions on you.

I would ask, since working hard can make more or an impression than a good grade. Teachers don’t always remember your grades, but know how you act every day in class. I would ask the teacher, but give him/her a way out. Say like “Would you be willing to write a letter of recommendation for me? If you think you wouldn’t have time or there is some other issue, please just let me know.” That way there is a easy and polite way for them to say no if they want to say no.
