Hello,
I was wondering if someone could give me some information on the math diagnostic exam incoming freshman are required to take?
Is it timed? What type of math? How many questions? Are calculators allowed? Is it online? etc.
Also, do I have any say in what math course I take, or is it solely determined by the diagnostic test? If I requested to take Calc 1 despite a poor score on the exam, do you think they would let me? I have already taken Precalculus and DO NOT want to take it again haha. Do colleges usually make exceptions for this kind of thing? I’m not anticipating doing poorly on the exam, I just want to have a plan b.
I really wish they would just use ACT/SAT scores…
Thank you!
The test is online. It covers material through pre-calculus, so it’s basically SAT math along with some trigonometry. If you don’t “pass” the online version in June, you can study and take it again during orientation.
Also if you want to self study CWRU says:
“Students interested in self-study should feel free to explore and use any available resources. The CWRU Department of Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics has identified aleks.com as a possible option. The fee-based service generates a study plan based on an individual assessment, and students move through the program by demonstrating mastery of each topic.”

don’t sweat it. it is a general math aptitude test + trig. it is timed for an hour, but I was able to finish it half the time (and I’m not a math genius by any stretch…)
