help me choose, LA or Berkeley?

The important thing is to remember the California Ivies.

They are : Berkeley, UCLA, Cal Tech, UCSF, UCSD, USC, Pomona/Claremont/Harvey Mudd, and Stanfurd.

California Ivies + 4 would be University of Chicago, University of Michigan, MIT, and Johns Hopkins

I'm in the same situation. I'm like, 60-40 for UCLA, because I'm offered the regent scholarship for here. (but then there's the Pomona question.) I have friends in Cal and in UCLA and they are all very happy where they are. I think UCLA and Cal have different kinds of social life. UCLA seems more like the beach and jamba juice kind, whereas Cal is the weird artsy-districts and coffee bean kind. Or maybe those are just stereotypes.

Now, does anyone know which school is better for English? or Humanities in general? Social science?

SpecialK...I did not even apply to Beserkly...weird place and I wouldn't want to go there at all! I am also from NoCal. UCLA is by far the better school socially. It attracts more normal people...not as great of a nerd factor. Go for UCLA.

berkeley is actually better at humanities and english. i think theyre tied for number one in english with harvard (phd program) but that trickles down and you get those nobel winning professors. berkeleys better for science because of the name if youre willing to work. academics is same for both. if youre choosing pick based on the environment. the academics are the same, and you do need a comfortable environment to do well in college

"It attracts more normal people...not as great of a nerd factor." Believe me- there are plenty of nerds at LA as well. More "normal" people? I think it attracts more "image-conscience" people. What is "normal" anyways?

im gonna visit LA on friday so ill tell you my opinions later. for now im not really for berkeley just cuz i dont really like the atmosphere. but the school seems cool

Hey dawgquele, berkeley is no scarier than LA. They are both in urban areas, and so you need to take the precautions you would in any city. Too bad for dawgquelle's cousin, but that is just one data point. Compare that with getting lost on LA freeways and ending up in downtown near USC.....

Anyways, Berkeley is much easier to get around than LA as you don't need a car. The weather is great - once you get used to summer morning fog.

Both are good schools, but CAL is the center and heartbeat of Berkeley and that definitely is not the case for LA.

good luck.

Cool. I hope everyone finds their calling, and makes their families very happy.

UCLA is a great school. As good if not slightly better overall than Cornell IMO. Also UCSD on a pure science basis alone is equal to Cornell's sciences. Cornell has the best sciences out of any ivy league.

Its pretty remarkable to achieve this as a public school. And a lot of well off kids do attend a lot of the UC's as well. Its that good.

"Anyways, Berkeley is much easier to get around than LA as you don't need a car." That's assuming that first years drive- which most don't since most dont get parking permits. Buses are the way to go (for both LA and Cal). I have a permit but I still take the buses- the traffic is just horrendous at LA and for all you commuters, your stereo system will be your best friend.

Competition and pressures scares the crap out of me; I don't mind competing with other students, but to the point of sabotage? That's ridiculous.

in reply to the post above, USC is really scary.

i had heard stories that it was in a bad area, but i didn't know it was that bad.

my friend compared it to an orea.. if you guys get it.

anyways, i'm from norCal and i got accepted to both to, but i'm most likely going to attend UCLA.

basically, i want to get away from home because i've been living in norCal since forever, and LA has the best food. UCSD has a jamba juice though, hah.

I'm in the same boat as well. I'm going into business and I know that Berk has a much better rep for business. But I love socal weather and the social aspect down there.

Would it be feasable for me to go to UCLA for 4 years, then get a MBA at Berk after 2 years?

Dude...you dont get an MBA after you do undergrad...you get one after years of work experience

USC's surrounding area is not THAT bad. why would some of these rich kids tolerate it?

the campus itself is pretty, obviously the surrounding area isn't great but it isn't as horrible as it seems like it to you smile77

scary things happen everywhere

So would it be feasible for me to go to UCLA for 4 years and then go to Berk for post graduate?

you mean graduate?
Sure, if you get accepted (good luck trying)
