Would a socially conservative intellectual who abhores partying and lewd behavior, but also hates eltism fit well at stanford?

LOL. You sound like the ideal UChicagoan. But to answer your question, you would probably be able to find your niche/group of people at Stanford if you look hard enough.

politically lean left though, i just mean I prefer modest clothing as opposed to designer sunglasses and shiny designer clothes and raunchy dancing, if you know what I mean. I love bike riding though, but don't really like the architecture. Help please.

i know, everyone says i fit uchicago, and I really liked it when I visited, the people were my kind of people. I just cannot afford bad grades, my parents would stop paying tuition, i would live unhappily with their constant nagging, and not get into a good grad school. Plus im scared of the area. Anything else that could convince me to go Uchicago? I really loved it, especially the architecture and the rain when I visited, i felt at peace. Please give me more info about uchicago. It would have to be something absolutely amazing for it to beat Stanford, especially for my parents, thats where they are pushing, really really hard.

"can i find a quiet and intellectual atmosphere at Stanford if they are so involved and rara for sports?"

Ok get a grip we are talking about Stanford hahaha. Of course. I don't think Stanford is actually all that preppy. We are not talking Princeton or the Hamptons, it is more of a environmentalist-earthy preppy if that.

Did you visit Stanford? I only ask because Stanford is by no means a party school. Honestly, I think Chicago, Stanford and Columbia are all in the same ball park.

As for picking Chicago over Stanford, well you get the big city environment and if people are telling you to be more independent (from what I read in their justification to go to Columbia) then Chicago affords you that opportunity. Stanford (which I do love) is rather insular by comparison.

Chicago has 81 Nobel Prize Winners affiliated with the campus in its history

Stanford has 27.

One more thing you can find political groups of all orientations on all campuses don't worry about that so much.

But after re-reading this post this is what stood out to me the most:

"when I visited, i felt at peace."

I think you should impart that to your parents. That sounds like the right choice.

jkjkjkj:

are you an asian? if that's the case, i am beginning to see the picture. most if not all asian american parents want only hypsm. and if that is the case, you have to sort out two basic problems.

1) first really find out what you want. many of what you describe seem to point towards u chicago. just go throu again, math science (i think u chicago has the best, or at least top 3, math program), language literature (top liberal arts; western civ considered very best), econ (one of the very best econ programs, chicago school of economics), quiet intellectual, definitely yes, laid-back (perhaps in their own way) but deep deep thinking (stanford is more laid back but very hard studying too).

perhaps weaknesses include cold weather, no heavy partying (unless you consider having deep conversations with your peers as one type of partying)
and students don't care much sports (again pretty much different from stanford that goes high on sports. in fact stanford beats all ivies hands down in sports ranking).

2) once you make up your mind, then go to stanford if you finally think it fits you and that will please your parents. if you eventually think it's u chicago, then spend time with your parents and sort the problem out. u chicago is probably quite underranked compared to, say, hypsm. but it's coming up the prestige ladder more and more. u chicago is consistently ranked top 10 according to rankings of the best world universities by shanghai jingtao, if your parents are (chinese) asian parents. also ranked top ten by times world top universities.

in any case, the schools on your list are all top. you can't go wrong academically wise. if anything, after undergrad, you still can consider going to any other one you like.

just relax. you just have more than too good a couple of choices. it's tough deciding what's best when they're all among the best but nothing to worry. if anything, it's a good problem a few might envy. so just be sensitive when talking to people for advice. best of luck. bright future awaits you.

i can't get bad grades, im dumb enough as it is. i like a lot about uchicago, im sad to say no, but I think Ill have to. Sometimes my parents do know what is best, I should probably listen to their advice. Another question, do you think Stanford will help me more in the long run in terms of job prospects than uchichago, my parents think so. I guess i just need to be convinced that stanford is for me and that I will fit very well, i can never know that and I don't feel like I do right now. Oh well, that's life, decisions. Thanks for all the replies guys!

You got into Chicago. Yes it's tough but if you got in you can do the coursework. In terms of long terms job prospects both place equally into grad schools(which is what i think youre asking?) and get heavily recruited by major firms. It's tough for me to listen to you say that

when clearly you dont think it is.

Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford Stanford

What are the benefits of the scholars program? That may add alot of perks for you. Stanford is an amazing school and you can find non partyers at every school especially if you choose a sub free dorm. If you got into all those schools do not worry so much about grades, you will do well anywhere. Brown does offer a lot of flexibility. Columbia is a great school but students seem more competitive there. You can't go wrong. Let us know what you decide.

im even more confused now, thanks to all of you who gave me advice, especially beefs. Im just gonna decide, and that's that. Thank you guys.

Let us know what you decide! Good Luck!
