I've been accepted by Oberlin, Carnegie Mellon, University of Michigan, and Harvard. I'm on Columbia's waitlist and I would dump any of those schools if I got in there...but the waitlist comes out after I have to commit!

I don't know which school to choose. I live in Cambridge, MA. and I really hate the idea of not leaving for college. Oberlin is a school I love, but I'm really a city kid. Carnegie Mellon is in a city, but I didn't like it as much. U Mich is pretty far away for traveling.

I feel like there's a lot I'm not considering in choosing, but I don't know what to think about. Does anyone have a suggestion or an opinion for me?

^ Well if money is an issue, then follow the money. You may wish to also consider your program of interest and their relative department rankings.

Money being equal…I believe Harvard U is on a completely different tier than any school in this country or likely in the world.

Money is a big issue. Harvard will likely give me the most money, but Carnegie Mellon and Oberlin are also willing to chip in quite a bit. I am a definite Humanities kid, with a big interest in writing for stage and screen and in history. I mostly want to go to college to figure out what I actually want to do with my life.

Here’s the question: am I crazy to turn down Harvard because I’ve grown up on the campus?

^ definitely. If you’re going to live in the dorms, you’ll be leaving home. And even if that were not true, “I wanna go away” isn’t a great reason to turn down a good school.

Most kids living in dorms at college are really away from home. Unless your parents have no boundaries, you’ll probably see them no more often than kids who live three hours way see theirs.
