how’s santa cruz as a town? is there a lot to do?

oh and at kresge, are all the apartments separated by the themes?
like, are all the same gender apartments all lined up in a row, or will there be apartments of all girls next to apartments of all guys, ya know?

@ProteinMan: Yes, that is the ratio for the college as a whole. But within Crown, there are more men than women.

hey I had a few questions:

Can someone describe the different colleges to me, in terms of what type of person would best fit into each college?

Are there any public pools? I’m a certified lifeguard/Swim Instructor and I want to know if there’s a chance i could get a job nearby.

So I’m leaning heavily towards UCSC, but I’m confused about what college to pick. Any suggestions?

Here are a few things about me:
- Female
- Asian
- from a predominately white suburb, but honestly I have no preference ethnicity wise (something fairly mixed would be good)
- prefer having a nice view/environment outside the dorms
- not really into drinking/smoking/drugs but I like to let loose once in a while
- open minded, really chill
- would like be around studious people, but not overly nerdy
- I don’t mind partying, but nothing extreme
- somewhere with a lot of nice and relaxed people
- I have nerd/gamer interests but I’m pretty social
- I’ll probably be biking/swimming a lot recreationally
- I plan to major in neuroscience and do the whole pre-med thing (double major if I can handle it)
- I want to get involved in clubs/volunteer/extracurriculars
- I’ll probably bring a car to campus just in case things come up at home

Hmmm I think thats it oh and spacious dorms would be nice

geezlooueez:
If you’re an incoming freshman, you will not be permitted to bring your car to campus. You can appeal if you have a valid reason, but appeals being granted is rare for freshmen and sophomores. If you’re a junior transfer, note that parking passes are issued on a first come, first served basis. We ran out of permits more quickly than usual this past year to the point temporary permits were no longer being sold to on campus students (even juniors and seniors).

heykells:
I don’t know of any pools around town. They probably exist, but do remember the city is a coast city ;). Most are going to go down to the ocean. Hopefully someone else can give you a more definite answer.

xx93fifi:
Santa Cruz itself is okay. The city is considered to be significantly more dangerous than the campus itself. Or so I was told during a required meeting after I transferred. The campus is very safe, though. Both entrances are guarded and an ID is required to enter campus after 8pm (you can call down to the gate kiosks to have a guest let through, though).

Around the city, eh, there’s some places to go. I personally like the Boardwalk when I have the spare money to get a year pass and the time to waste there. There’s also the beach. It really depends on what you consider fun to go do, though. I don’t leave campus much.

Not sure on the apartment set up. It’s always looked to me like things are randomized. One can request an all-girls apartment or a co-ed. We do have gender-neutral housing (boys and girls can room together) although that might only be in dorms. Not sure, though. The apartments are so clustered that I doubt you would notice.

Regarding Santa Cruz city, it’d not that bad. There’s a lot to do and as long as you mind your own business you should be ok. Always go with people though to be safe.

thank you guys for the responses! i have so many questions haha. thank you for answering them all, i really appreciate it :)

okay okay, another question just came to me.
how is cowell? i haven’t heard a lot about it, but i think i might have read that it has a decent social scene? is it nice? which college is closest to most of the classes associated with an english/journalism major?

Is there any off-campus parking? My dad has a history medical issues that have recently escalated, and i’d rather have a way of getting home quickly just in case. My parents are divorced so its just going to be him in the household.

For those who live in Southern California (specifically LA), what’s the best way to get home for the holidays and such, assuming driving is out.

geezlooueez:
Santa Cruz has precious little parking and I honestly would not leave even a junker car anywhere in the city for more than a few hours to go to a store. There are some places around town you might be able to purchase an over-priced monthly permit (parking garage downtown or Boardwalk parking lot, for example), but they are very limited. There’s nothing keeping you from trying, though, and you still have the ability to appeal for on campus.

You could also keep your eyes open for people living in houses selling driveway space. Those offers pop up every now and then.

mashka92:
There’s carpools, train, plane, bus, your parents coming to pick you up, or some combination of all or some of those.

okay i’ll just manage then.

Now what about which college?

is there a cheering team? or any kind of spirit club? dancing team?
just wondering, not a big deal though.

how’s the social atmosphere at cowell?

so been reading comments and i thinking of going 9/10 but the writing seemed so off for me, i mean i can write and pretty well too but i don’t like to so how is the requirement for 9/10? I was also thinking Crown (YAY for nerd sterotype?) but from the comments it seemed like it has the old building feel which is kind of an eh for me but yea not too bad depending on how exactly it looks. Just looking for some more comments specifically on 9/10 and crown and i do plan to take a campus tour so i will get to see them but before that just wanted to get to know some more.

@xx93fifi
I’m pretty close to Cowell and have a lot of friends there so I could tell you about it. It was actually my first choice college. It’s pretty nice, it’s the closest college to the gym and bookstore. A lot of the athletic/fit people go there since it’s so close to the sports field. Also, not to be shallow, but many people say that Cowell/Stevenson have the best looking people.

@mashka92
Most people who live in Southern California go back via airplane. Some take Greyhound but I don’t recommend that option. One of my friends said it takes around 20 hours for the Greyhound to get to LA. Greyhounds stops and buses tend to attract a lot of weird/sketchy people.

So I’m thinking of putting cowell as my first choice and then crown. My only concern is that they’re some oldest colleges (especially cowell) there. Does that mean they’re run down? Or have there been a lot of renovations? Would you guys recommend taking a bike to campus?

im planning on transferring to ucsc in the fall
ive been reading this thread and really dont know which college would suit me best,
i dont play video games, and i like time to be quiet and study when i need to, but im also looking forward to partying on the weekend and stuff when i can
i definitely wouldnt classify myself as a preppy, but i am athletic, but i most likely wont want to play on a team
i dont mean to sound conceited but im more into art, music, and fashion
any suggestions?

Unless they change things drastically next year, you’re going to have to live in the Transfer Community at Porter regardless of affiliation (assuming you’re planning on living on campus). Just giving you a heads up.
But it sounds like you’d probably fit in at Porter anyways.

Can anyone help me decided on the college that seems to suit me:

-Hispanic
-Into Sports
-listen to mainly hip hop and r&b
-laid back
-not into any hard drugs
-into occasional partying
-looking for people that are social

Now I understand most of you will say Oaks… but can you give me some specific information/details on the college. And of course any other colleges that may suit me.
