help me choose

We can only do one more college visit trip before my S has to start applying in the fall.
However we can't do all of the schools left on our "maybe" list.

The trip would be a thurs, fri & sat. long weekend (I can't take anymore time off of work).
We need to choose to either go north or south (we live in NJ).

We can either visit Umass, BU, Northeaster & Babson or UMD, American, GWU & UVA.

My S is looking to major in finance.

If it helps we've already seen a mix of reach, match & safety schools (CMU, Pitt, Fordham, Temple, TCNJ, Rutgers).
The only two he took of his list are Fordham (just did not feel comfortable there) and Rutgers (only went to see it because I begged him to at least take a look - too close to home).
All the others he liked even though they were different sizes, different types of locations, etc.., He's obviously not picky, except when it's a definite No.

We are signed up to do Saturday visits at U of Del, NYU and Penn State in the next few weeks.

Any opinions on which way we should head (don't worry about the cost)?

BU, NU and Babson would be an easy trip to do in one long weekend. UMASS Amherst is several hours drive from Boston, you would have to allot one day to that one school. Why is it on your list? My S is planning to major in finance next fall and I didn’t see any thing special about their finance program. What about Bentley? It is very close to Babson and would be doable.

I don’t know too much about the other schools in the DC area and their finance program so I can’t comment.

Umass got on there because we have my younger S on all these visits with us (he’ll be a J next year) wants to major in Sports Management, from what I see Umass is one of the best schools for it on the East Coast.
We’ll take a look at Bentley, thanks.

It is April, and except for ED/AD apps, most are not due until end of December at the earliest… is there some reason you can’t make another trip in the 8 months remaining until apps are actually due? I understand the desire to have it done (oh, do I ever!). But since you are on the east coast, seems like it would not be that hard to do another long weekend. Can your spouse maybe take him on the other swing if you can’t even get time off in the fall?

We really will not be able to take any more days off until next January (too late for pre-application visits).

Well, your S can go to a favorite himself. It does cause agita, but it can be done. Or he can apply and then visit the places he’s accepted.

We never did make it to U of Chicago, even though S was accepted there. He wanted to go, but it was a big expense. He said there was no way he’d choose it over his first choice so we never did visit. I still wish we’d gotten there, but the outcome would have been the same.

Hi,

I live near the Washington, DC area, so I can offer some suggestions . . .

American, GW and UMD are close enough that you could see all three in a day or two. UVA in Charlottesville is about 2 hours from Washington DC.

Keep in mind that of the four schools south of NJ you are looking at, only the University of Maryland and UVA offers an undergraduate major in finance, while American only offers a minor in finance. (GW and American only offers finance as a masters degree program but they also have undergraduate majors in business).

If he has good stats, American is known for generous merit aid while GW is not so generous.

I’m biased toward the University of Maryland, as I’m an alumna there. The Smith Business School has a good reputation, and Maryland has a large population of schools from the New York and New Jersey area.

PM me if you have more questions.

^^
I meant to say that Maryland has a large population of STUDENTS from the New York and New Jersey area.

Sorry for the typo.

Already visited: CMU, Pitt, Fordham, Temple, TCNJ, Rutgers
planned trip: U of Del, NYU and Penn State

this weekend: north –> Umass, BU, Northeastern & Babson or
south –>UMD, American, GWU & UVa

I know you’re trying to cover all combinations, (large/small, public/private, business-specific/generalist), and you have. Some of this has to do with the likelihood of getting in (i.e. UVa is more difficult for OOS) and how focused into “finance” he wants to get. My bias is towards recommending going north. Babson and NEU provide a different mission than the more general programs you’ve seen so far. You can also swing by UConn, which also has an excellent finance program. Aside from UVa’s business program, I think of schools in the DC area as more focused on IR/politics.

Some schools don’t care if you visit. UVA does not track visits. For those schools that do, it’s wise to make the visit. We did not visit every single school my kids applied to. For some of them, we decided to visit if accepted or during the app process. I would go with the MA schools in your case. We went south and west and ran out of steam this time before going north.

I need the same guidance. I’m a junior in the IB program and a baseball player. My parents don’t think we can hit all the schools in one trip w/o someone getting hurt ;-)

Have already been to UF, Babson, Bentley…loved Babson

Union, RPI, Hamilton, Syracuse

Franklin & Marshall, Lehigh, Bucknell, Carnegie Mellon, Gettysburg

We are looking at a NY State trip and probably a Mid-Atlantic.

Business major, but happy with Econ in Lib Arts school
