Hi, I got admitted to the following different universities: UC San Diego, Penn State, University of Florida, UC Davis, University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign, Northeastern, University of Georgia, and East Carolina University. I’m planning on pursuing Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Economics. Right now, I’m interested in medicine, business, law, and engineering. I’ve visited some of these universities, but I need some advice on which university to pick.
Home state?
Costs for each school and are they all affordable?
Any preference at all for location? What about weather, social scene?
For Law and Medical school, you would want to keep Undergrad costs at a minimum since both will expensive. If you go into Engineering, are you considered Grad school down the road?
My home state is North Carolina. So, the costs for the universities are around the same. I don’t have any preference for the location or weather.
I would narrow the list.
Assumes you don’t care about costs. You would prefer a school that also is also a great place to live and enjoy. Access to research and academic chops in BME and has strong Econ and potentially prehealth advising. Nice weather optional.
UCSD
UGA
UF
UIUC
What are your thoughts on these four alone and in comparison. And I can give you my personal round two after that info.
Have you looked through the course requirements and elective choices for that given major? I would look at that as it does vary from school to school. UGA’s engineering program aside from agricultural engineering is pretty new just as an fyi. Which schools have you seen and what was your thoughts in terms of what you did and did not like?
—UIUC just started their new medical school this year. But, they are very strong in engineering. So, their medical school has a lot of engineering incorporated in it.
—UGA is in Athens, Georgia; I didn’t really like the environment around the campus.
—UF was amazing. They had good research opportunities, nice campus life, and strong academics. I really loved UF when I visited as it had a more relaxed vibe.
—I haven’t gotten the chance to visit UCSD yet. But I will take the chance to visit over spring break, which is in 2 weeks for me.
—I’m visiting Penn State this weekend.
I guess the biggest two contenders for me would be University of Florida and Penn State because I want to stay on the east coast.
UIUC sounds interesting in that you want to major in biomedical and they have a Med school. I think you know what you like and recommend you choose the one where you see yourself which appears to or UF or potentially Penn.
Thank you so much this really helps. From what I’ve heard, UF and Penn State are similar in their college environments, except one is in the North and the other is in the South.
I have narrowed it down to these 3 choices: UCSD, UF, and Penn State. Any advice on which one I should go to?
