Help me find some schools!

Im currently a Junior In A competitive Atlanta HighSchool. Born in North Africa and moved here at the age of 4 (Considered African American).

Here is what my problem is! Current GPA 3.2..BUT...There are 3 semesters left. So I can potentially get up to a 3.45+ (Which I mostly am going to do!) Huge rising trend.

Want to know something weird? Past 3 years at this school , we have had full new administration, principle, counselors every year! This eventually led to schedule changes (Blocks to Periods and vice-versa). Im sure this issue can be brought up during the application process. Im currently taking 1 AP Class and 1 Honors this semester.

My SAT is going to be taken at the beginning of December...Hopefully Santa can bring me good SAT Scores! I will hopefully get a 2000-2100.

PROS:
-African American
-Hopefully SAT Score
-Rising Trend
-Live in Atlanta?
-Great Rec's.
-Will be able to visit the school once again
-Will be doing Early Action (If its even worth it)
-Great EC's (Hands on Atlanta,Work (YMCA),Fund Raisers around the area,Soccer Team,Chess team captain,French Club)

CON:
-GPA :(

Maybe Interested in:
-BioMedical Engineering
-Some kind of business major?
-Something that has to do with my creativity?

Please throw out some majors and schools I could look into

no one? :(

well it's too broad >.<

SAT scores need to come out first heh

well if u get 2100... try for Ivies

my friend was from Africa and he had 1960 on SAT and he took like 6 AP classes ( he was valedictorian)

he got into Cornell and Columbia (rejected at MIT and Harvard)

Are you Arab? If so, colleges wouldn't appreciate you marking down "African American"

Anyway, here's a preliminary list for you...some reaches, some matches, somes safeties:

Carnegie Mellon
Lehigh University
Tufts University
University of Michigan
Boston University
Case Western Reserve University
University of Delaware
University of Illinois - Urbana Champaign
Arizona State
Michigan State
Penn State - University Park
University of Pittsburgh

I just started school at the University of Chicago. Reading your post, it sounded like I might put in a plug for the best school in the world. Before you do anything, wiki the school and read up on its amazing stats. But after you've been soundly impressed, check out how your own academic profile matches up. It sounds like you are the kind of student we like here. Your GPA really isn't everything; if you can write a solid, intelligent essay, that is weighted much more highly on the app. Don't sweat the numbers so much as what picture you make as a whole student-package. If you can make yourself stand out in some way (born in N Africa, healthy EC involvement sounds good), that will more than make up for less-than-perfect stats on your forms.

Then why did you promote Chicago?

You have some great colleges in Georgia- U Georga, Georgia Tech, and Emory. Check them out; they seem like they'd be good fits. Virginia Tech, Ohio State, and UT Austin might also be matches. Wake Forest would be a match if you pulled your GPA up, although it doesn't offer BME. Consider Berry College as a safety.

what about emory?

You most definitely should apply to U of Georgia and Georgia Tech, given the large amount of financial assistance you will receive as a Georgia Hope Scholar. Also think about Morehouse College, if you are a male. Very solid in the sciences and great placement into premier graduate schools. Unfortunately, financial aid from Morehouse can be middling if not poor.

North Carolina Central University, another HBCU, has a Biotech research center. NCCU is situated in the famous triangle research center region. There are cross registration opportunities with Duke University and UNC-Chapel Hill. NCCU's traditional liberal arts core curriculum is reputedly the best in the UNC System. And NCCU is throwing tuition money and laptop computers at applicants (including non-NC residents) as encouragement to enroll. The state of North Carolina and private donors are putting significant money into NCCU.

Consider also U of South Carolina-Columbia and Wofford College.

Leaving the south, I would recommend Worcester Polytechnic Institute, a private college that is similar to Georgia Tech but with a greater variety of academic opportunities available to the science student, iincluding a great Humanities program and a joint-degree with the WPI Business School. There's not a lot of racial diversity at WPI but the school is committed to improving that.

Michigan State University would also be high on my list for the Life Sciences. MSU has a college dedicated to the life sciences, the Lyman Briggs School; it is excellent. U of Alabama-Birmingham is very strong in the life sciences also.

It's may be a longshot, but consider also Northwestern University in Chicago.

mmcree2010 , that was the exact school I was looking to get into , but ALOT of people said I would not have a chance. But Err who knows , Thanks alot for everyones support...One question...

What would I mark down for arab than? I was born In Africa...the politically correct term would be "African American" US Citizen and all.

Another pretend URM. Shame on you! Look up the definition of African American, it specifically means of black African decent.

Well I am technically black...and African American....and arab...I dont see how that changes anything? 60% of libyan's are black (also darker than anyone i have ever seen! :P)

umm i could be wrong but a person cant be "arab".. you can be "a arab" but not arab, and i dont see how an african is classified as an arab, i think you would just mark down "african american" because if you're of middle eastern descent, a lot of apps dont have that option but some say "if you are middle eastern, check asian-american or asian." are you 100% african or do u have another distinct middle eastern background??

Born in Libya , Libya consists of mostly black people...they are considered arabs. and yes you can be arab. thats like me saying im chinese...or im american...do you say "Im a chinese?" No not at all.

But yes , im 110% Libyan.

Carnegie Mellon University likes diversity so you should give that a try as it's business is top notch to say the least and so is it's engineering.

If you are black, then you can mark African American. If you are not, then that's very morally questionable. I have no problem with people taking full advantage of affirmative action. I'd do the same thing if I were a URM, but making things up...that's another story...

I beleive being born in africa considers you a URM , but not sure.

So white S. Afreicans are urms? That's idiotic.

It does not, Bashi. If you're middle eastern, you're not considered a URM. Is it fair? No. But is that the way it is? Yes. You just have to go with the flow.

suze, im talking about non-white....
