I don’t see the value of your hook decreasing between ED1 and ED2. This would be different if you were an athlete. I would go with option 3. You are very fortunate that your 2nd choice school(where you have a hook) has ED2.
Option #2 gives you three shots on goal. As a child of two faculty members, I think your chances at UChicago are actually pretty decent. Columbia and Chicago are very similar colleges. The only advantage I see with Columbia is if you’re interested in Engineering.
Does the faculty tuition benefit pay more if you attend UChicago? Or does it cover Columbia tuition at the same rate?
I’ve heard that the ED1 and ED2 acceptance rates at Chicago are similar. Your chances are obviously highest if you apply ED1 Chicago. But based on the points above, I think option #2 makes good sense.
Yea, Uchicago and Columbia are super similar (core, city setting, overall vibe) but I think what draws me a bit closer to Columbia is just the experience of leaving home and going to school in a city like nyc. I’ve also heard that its grade deflation is less insane although I’ve also heard that Chicago isn’t horrible at all for humanities majors.
I’m not totally sure about the exact numbers regarding tuition benefits but they would be similar if not the same for both schools (or any school for that matter).
idk the rules regarding reviving old threads but i thought id give an update incase anyone in the future has a similar dilemma and stumbles upon this thread.
I think a couple of y’all predicted this, but I went with option 2, and was deferred from Columbia ED and accepted to UChicago EA. I gonna throw in a couple more rd applications but they dont matter as much because i’m obviously happy at Chicago.
Thank you all for your help!
Excellent outcome. You can relax.
Now we know what it takes to be a EA unicorn at UChicago.
Congrats! Hope you enjoy your time there.
You mentioned that you wanted to get away for a while. Take advantage of the study abroad programs. There are some that let you spend a term abroad while earning core credits.
