So I have been looking for an easy ALP (grade-wise), but can't find any. Have any of you taken one or know of one that's a relaxing walk in the park? Don't get me wrong - I am not a slacker, I am just trying to focus on my more important science classes. thanks

I reccomend Russian lit classes. The grading is usually pretty easy, though I wouldn't say it's a walk in the park. You do learn a lot though.

I had a class in the english department that I really enjoyed with Dr. Gopen called Reading Poetry Aloud. It wasn't easy though so that doesn't really answer your question.

try art history ...but dont take 69 or 70 because although they are easy, they require a lot of memorizing for quizzes which isnt so bad, but it takes time. i would recommend a 100 level art history that seems interesting. you will most likely end up with 3 papers tops, and it isnt too mentally draining. grading, from my experience, isnt too harsh either

Yeah I was in the same situation as you. I took Intro to Jazz (fairly easy class that's thought of as a slacker class, but it's very interesting if you want to get something out of it. Nice change of pace). I also took a Docstudies seminar that taught techniques for making documentaries. I enjoyed both, and they were great ALP credits (especially since they had little to do with arts, literature, or performances in the traditional sense in my opinion).

english 26s classes are generally a good way to do it. they're non-major english classes, but are also seminars on top of being ALPs (and i think possibly W, but as a major, i've never looked into their codings) and have usually the COOLEST themes ever... they're also like 'mixed media' so while you'll have a couple of books in the course of the semester, you may also find yourself watching tv shows or movies and listening to music and things like that (my friend took one and watched sex and the city and i was jealous of the thought of watching satc for credit).

also, i like film classes. a lot of them may have supplemental readings whether it's textbook type things or novels, but many use the film itself as the primary text. so there may be weekly screenings or the need to see one or two movies a week, but they're usually great ones.

does anyone know if for instance ARTHIST 70D, which is supposed to fulfill ALP, CCI, CZ fulfills all of them at once or is there a cap on the number of "areas of knowledge" and "modes of inquiry" a course can fulfill simultaneosuly?

and thanks a lot for all your replies

I think a course can only fulfill one Area of Knowledge (it's retroactive...it'll automatically fulfill whichever one you need at whatever semester in the course of your Duke undergrad) but as many Modes of Inquiry as it has.
