<p>Jane Austen was very careful to only write about things she knew through and through, from experience. Thus, you have only one conversation in her books in which there are no women present. That's also why P&P is limited omniscent almost all the time--she wasn't comfortable saying what Darcy was thinking, since she didn't know how men thought. This isn't just from inexperience with men--she grew up with tons of brothers and borders that her father tutored.</p>
<p>Charlotte Bronte was ALWAYS, ALWAYS pulling from life. For instance, in Jane Eyre, she's Jane and Mr. Rochester is M. Hegar, a French tutor she had a major crush on. She turned his wife into the insane Bertha. Later, she grew very liberal in her borrowings--in Shirley, she copied a neighbooring family into her fictional book, down to the details of their wall paper!</p>
