I wrote my personal statements for the UC Application a while ago, and my twin sister just decided she wants to apply too and is writing hers right now. In one of my statements I talked about several recent illnesses and deaths in my family and their influence on my aspirations and dreams. She just asked me to read her first statement a minute ago, and it discusses the same subject in a very similar manner. I know she read mine before writing hers but I know she wouldn't intentionally copy me. It's not as though writing about family illness was one sibling's THING in the first place; I know that the experience affected both of us profoundly and therefore it's completely reasonable for both of us to write about it. But the essays are SO similar! What should we do?

Is the writing style the same? I mrsn, i can’t imagine a school punishing you both because you, sisters, are writing about a very intense experience in your personal essay that you obviously would have in common. That would be like punishing you for having the same address on your application or something!!

Honestly, the best thing I would do is have you guys write your essays separately without comparing ntoes or inadvertently influenzing each other!!! The topics are obviously going to be the same as you are sisters but the writing styles probably aren’t the same; you guys probably don’t use the same vocabulary, organize your sentences in the same order, etc. Also, don’t forget that your entire application is probably going to be different - you probably have a higher GPA than she does, she has a higher SAT, she plays lacrosee while you are on the cheerleading squad, you volunteer at a hospital and she works with the ASPCA, that sort of thing.
