Help narrow down college list and chance me

Yes, exactly, that was my point. CS at UCM might be one’s preference over undeclared at another UC. If so, one should send their application to UCM in November.

Agreed. UC Merced for CS is picking up steam at our local high school. Many students that I know will be attending because it was the CS program that they either got into and/or could afford. If CS is the goal I would put it on my list.

What did you do after school other than homework? Did you work? Did you have family obligations (cooking, cleaning, shopping, taking care of siblings)? Did you play video games? Did you go for a run, go to the gym, workout? All schools (other than the CSUs) will want to know how you spent your time outside of school.

mostly didn’t do much, especially since was school was online, so most of my time was for school, and my free time was just watching TV or playing games

U of Arizona has your name all over it !!!

You get a quick admit. Tuition is affordable and then the pressure is off for schools that will look at your ECs. If you don’t get in, no issue. You already have a great admit.

Great thanks! How would you say UofA is for CS compared to UC’s?

According to USNews, U of A is tied for #49 in CS, with (among others) UC-Santa Cruz.

Thank you! Definitely seems enticing, I prefer staying in CA, but still open to OOS especially Arizona!

I know that UofA has the GPA based merit scholarships, does anyone know of any other schools that do the same thing?

Yes but you’ll have to go farther. Alabama. Alabama Huntsville. Ms State. Arkansas Murray State. Truman state. New Mexico Many more

I mentioned AZ because unless there’s a political thing, it’s CAs neighbor. Tucson is gorgeous, school and city lean liberal and the college is great. The Honors dorm is wonderful with a dining hall and gym adjacent.

I’m not saying go to U of A.

I’m saying apply, get in with your $$ in two weeks, and then the pressure is off. Try your UCs and CSUs but you’ll have one in the bag if they don’t work out. . U of A is solid in tech areas.

You might also look at WUE schools for possible cheap tuition. Like Reno or Oregon date if trying to stay close.

THanks for the help! Yeah, so I’m not a fan of those other states, which is why I limited myself to mainly CA, and also AZ and TX.

So for Tx I’d look at Tx Tech. But you don’t want to take an SAT/ACT so you are out on merit.

So many schools that offer auto merit do have test components to get it.
Miami of Ohio. South Carolina. Those are schools that don’t have a table but you’d do well. And wouldn’t need an SAT/ACT. But they’re not in your zone.

U of A gives you the don’t take a test flexibility, a great name and a safe and cheap fallback if the CSU/UC schools don’t work. If you want to expand your list, you realistically need a test score.

For CS, some schools are direct admits and some have a secondary admission after completing pre-requisites. Also in some schools CS is in the engineering school, while in some it is in the college of science.

If these differences matter, take a closer look at the school websites you are considering.

Ok so I tried limiting my college list, but this is what I have right now, and how does it look?
UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, UCI, UCD, UCSC, UCR
Cal Poly SLO, Cal Poly Pomona, CSULB, SJSU, SDSU, CSUN
ASU, UofA,
UT, UTD, TAMU (still not sure about these)

If costs are the same, would you attend any of the Texas schools over the California schools? If not, then you might want to eliminate some especially UT Austin since it would be a High Reach as an OOS applicant.

Texas A&M has a secondary admission process for first year general engineering majors to get into specific majors. The automatic admission college GPA is 3.75. For CS, it is very unlikely that there will be any space in the competitive part of secondary admission for those below 3.75. ME is also one of the more competitive majors, though EE is probably less so.

If you would choose UCM (engineering or CS) over UCSD / UCSB / etc. if they admit you as non-engineering / CS undeclared, then you may way want to add it to your application list.

I’m pretty interested in Texas schools, and I hope I can get into UTD with a scholarship.
