I don't know what you mean by "around the Michigan area." Is Kansas or LA too far? Is Minnosota too far? University of Michigan has an alledgedly good art program. Kansas City Art Institute is good as is Otis School of Design in LA. What area of art are you interesed in? How far are you willing to go from your home?

Thanks for replying! First, I'd like to mention that I'm not even living in Michigan yet. I'm in Georgia right now, but moving in a couple of days. Everything is so chaotic...

Well, I was wondering about colleges that are are in or near Michigan. I consider Kansas and California far away... My ideal college would be located not too far away from family, so that visiting would be convenient.

And I was wondering, do you know what art programs they offer in UM? I found a site that lists all of the school's majors, but I'm not sure if it's reliable. There's something called "Graphic Design Commercial Art and Illus"... All in one? Can someone explain this? http://www.studentsreview.com/MI/UMAA_i.html

As for what area of art I'm interested in, I was thinking of graphic design, illustration, and maybe animation. However, according to that site I posted, animation isn't something you can choose at UM. Also, the site listed Drawing as a choice. How does this differ from Illustration? Also, is the 'Illus' in 'Graphic Design Commercial Art and Illus' the same thing as Illustration?

And if anyone has any suggestions about the best way to present your portfolio, please do. I'm thinking of putting my work on a website, but there has to be some kind of size standard that colleges choose, right?

Take a look here for starters: www.aicad.org

You'll find what stand-alone art schools offer what majors.

In the "general" vicinity of MI you can find: School of the Art Institute of Chicago (SAIC), about 200 mi from Ann Arbor; Cleveland Institute of Art, about 150 mi. from Ann Arbor; Carnegie Mellon University (about 250 mi.), and Art Institute of Cincinnati (about 230 mi. from Ann Arbor). All distances are approximate because I don't know where in MI you would originate and because all these distances are my best guess without resorting to Mapquest. These are all decent to excellent art schools and within a few hours of Michigan.

^ Thank you very much. I'll look into those schools.

Check out the Columbus (Ohio) College of Art and Design, too :-)
