Help on Deciding Where to Transfer - Aerospace Engineering

Hi everyone! So right now I am currently a student at Red Rocks Community College in Lakewood, Colorado. I am in my second year here, and I plan on transferring to a four year university next fall. However, I am unsure where to transfer.

I decided to attend Red Rocks Community College right out of high school while I decided where to go and completed some general requirements for engineering. I finished high school strong, with a 3.7 GPA unweighted and a 26 on my ACT. Now in college, I have completed General Chemistry I & II, and I am currently in Differential Equations and Physics I, and will be taking Physics II in the spring. I currently have a GPA of 3.7, I am a member of Phi Theta Kappa, and I have also interned with Lockheed Martin.

Given this information about me, I plan on studying aerospace engineering. I know for in state (I live in Colorado) CU Boulder is the only school with aerospace. However, Colorado School of Mines is an excellent school, but they only have mechanical engineering. If I am wanting to go into aerospace, which in state option is the best one? Also, I have highly considered Purdue and Georgia Tech, but I don’t know what my chances are being an out of state transfer. I meet the basic info for Purdue, but what would my chances be with transferring to Purdue or Georgia Tech? Are there any other good out of state options that I could make it into given my information? I also have $13,000 given to me for each semester of college. Any help on my chances or what my best options would be would be very much appreciated. Thank you in advanced!

are you working with a counselor at your xfer center?

That is NOT a problem. Aero companies hire even more Mech E grads than aero grads. They do the same thing.

As far as Purdue and GT, how would you pay for them? Would your family be willing to pay the $40K+/year?

That’s great news. Mines would be my top choice then. Mines is great and in state, I shouldn’t have a problem transferring over to them.

And for Purdue and GT, thats what I was trying to figure out. I would have to take out loans, my family is willing to pay $26K a year… so that would be pretty rough. Feels like Mines is my best option.

Silly to borrow if you have affordable instate options. Visit both CU and Mines and speak to their eng’g depts.

MechE is fine for those with Aero interests. MechE is more marketable anyway. Look over Mine’s course listings. They may not have an Aero major, but they may offer some Aero type classes in their MechE dept.

You can only borrow $7500 as a junior. Not enough to make up the difference for an OOS school. Why take out debt for no real gain.

Ditto what Erin’s Dad and M2CK said.

You should look no further than CSM, UC-Boulder, or Colorado State U. Mechanical Engineering will be fine. Keep in mind that at some noted STEM universities AE is a graduate program only. Companies such as Boeing, UTC, Lockheed and General Electric Aviation hire boat loads of Mechanical Engineers.
