Hi everyone!
As I'm sure all of you have, throughout my time in high school I have changed the major I would like to study numerous times. I know for a fact that I want to be a film director, so obviously a film major would be ideal. However, from what I have read, even those who have majored in film have called it a waste of time and money.
Therefore, recently i have been thinking of majoring in English and minoring in film. Is this a better idea? Or is there some other (more practical) major that will not waste my time or money, but still allow me to get educated in something I can use in the film industry?

English is not a “more practical” major than Film.

You should be aiming for various film programs: USC, UCLA, NYU, Chapman are a few I’ve heard of

I’m sorry but I just have to say this…

Why the hell are you going to school to become a director? If anything, why don’t you try to get a job somewhere else in show biz and network your way up and try producing small films? I don’t understand why someone would pay top dollar to go to a big name school for a film major.

Do go to school, but as terenc mentioned, go to a specific technical film program. A major in Film Studies in the English department somewhere is not what you likely think it is.

Of course, there’s not necessarily a set education trajectory to becoming a director. But for every Tarantino there are a bajillion aspirants who never made it past the video store employee stage.

@JeremyS: Unlike acting, lots of directors actually got their starts through a college education - though this is by no means required for entry into the industry.
