I'm considering applying to Northwestern University, I'd like to major in Communication Disorders (speech pathology or learning disabilities). Now I understand that I'm supposed to apply to the School of Communications if I want to have this major... but can I still take courses in the College of Arts & Sciences? Or the School of Education?

I've never visited Northwestern - are all the Schools in the same campus? Do students from the different schools still live together in dorms and interact, or is it like going to different colleges entirely?

Sorry I'm so clueless, but I'm used to dealing with small LACs and the Northwestern system is a little confusing for me. I'd appreciate any insight :)

Yes you can take classes in the other schools while you are a CSD major.

It's all one campus... the ONLY impact the "school you're in" has on your NU life is the core classes it requires you to take. Every program has "elective credits" which you can fulfill through classes in any of the schools, and many have "distribution requirements" that FORCE you to do so (if you have to take math, lit, etc. in the main college). When registration time rolls around, you literally can add any class you want, barring the class filling up with majors (which happens frequently) or any pre-requisites you're missing.

People live all over the place and in dorms you are likely to have people from every school represented. There are a few "residential colleges" with themes that end up over-representing certain majors (i.e. the Engineering Residential College, Slivka, has a lot of engineers) but even those have other people living there. So yeah, don't stress about it...just apply to the school that has the program you want.
