HELP! Problems with writing section!!!

Ok. I'm having a few issues with the writing section:

1 Verb tenses

I don't know when to use past perfect, present perfect, future perfect, past, present, future, etc.

Examples:

Katherine felt that she [(A) has not had] [(B) any understanding of] the [(C) highly intricate workings] of the stock market [(D) until] her uncle took her to the New York Stock Exchange. [(E) No error]

Why is answer choice (A) the answer?

[(A) Those who] defend sequoin trees [(B) from] loggers [(C) justified] [(D) doing so] on the grounds that such trees are irreplaceable. [(E) No error]

Why is answer choice (C) the answer?

2 Idioms

NEED HELP WITH IDIOMS (any lists?)

Example:

[(A) Opposite to] most people I know, Annie, ..

Why is "Opposite to" incorrect?

thx

it's A because she stopped "not understanding". has is used for things that has not stopped.

* he has been dating her since sophomore year.*

its C because justified is the wrong tense. it should be justify.

The idiom is opposite from

search for a list on google

so the first sentence you would just change it to "had no" instead of "has not had"
