Hi! I’m currently a sophomore in high school in Michigan. I’m looking to go into business for my major. So far, my cumulative gpa is a 4.0556 (weighted), 4.0 (unweighted) (4.0 freshman year, 4.1 first semester sophomore year). So far in my sophomore year, I have gotten all As but my honors bio grade for second semester is very borderline right now (90.1%), and I’m very worried- I have never received a b. I am very interested in the following schools and I would aprreciate feedback on which are possible with the track I’m on now. (what if I got a b in bio even though planning on business major?). I’m looking for more top tier schools. Thanks!!

This summer I am attending a leadership camp for my student congress and I am going to be a counselor at a camp for kids with muscular dystrophy.
Also, distance is no issue for me.
You were already told to stop worrying about your B. So far, your work with disabled kids and the muscular dystrophy camp sound like your strongest ECs. Study well for the SAT. I know it seems crazy, as the 98th percentile is great, but many kids at tippy top colleges will be in the 99th percentile. Don’t assume anything. Keep working hard and stay involved with what you are interested in. Meanwhile, I don’t see any schools you are intereted in (you said “the following schools”) but you need firmer ideas. You have given us nothing to go on. Big or small, rural or urban, Greek life, football games, or none of that, bohemian or preppy, liberal or conservative, party central or pass the milk, etc… Pick up a copy of the Fiske or Princeton Review guides to start getting a better idea of what interests you.
Sorry, I don’t know how that part was cut out. I’m interested in:
- Cal Berkeley
- UCLA
- University of Michigan
- Indiana
I would prefer a larger school with a D1 football/basketball team.
@Lindagaf
Is $55K/year affordable for UCB/UCLA? No financial aid for OOS students
@Gumbymom
I’m not too worried about that, more about being able to get in. If I got in, I could make it work:)
We’re wondering if your parents can “make it worth.”…unless you have $200k in the bank right now.
What are your parents saying about paying $200k for UCB or UCLA?
Why pay ~double for an OOS public university when your own state flagship is one of the best in the country?
The University of Southern California is a large school with D1 teams. It claims to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need (and also offers merit scholarships). It does have undergraduate business programs. I’m not sure I’d choose it over Michigan, though.
Other possibilities might include Cornell, Notre Dame, Georgetown, or Northwestern. They all claim to cover 100% of demonstrated financial need. However, these are even more selective than USC (or Michigan).
Not all “top tier” colleges have business majors. So check that out if it’s important to you.
I think you stand a chance at Ohio State. If yiu want D1 football, just look up a list. That’s pretty easy. I don’t know much about Indiana, but it think it’s the least selective of,the four on your very short list. You need match and safety schools. Your top three are reaches at this point.
I have no idea why UCLA is on your list. They do not have a business major. But maybe watching Division I football and basketball matters to you more than your major?
But I do encourage your interest in the UC schools. Starting this year every OOS student is full pay and we sure can use the contribution!
How is it possible that you had a 4.1 unweighted on a 4-point scale? Particularly with an A minus?
@theoriginalclone
I believe he was referring to his weighted GPA when he was listing specific years. Also, the vast majority of high schools count an A minus as a 4, not a 3.7.
I saw you have a decent shot, but your PSAT score is a bit low for an OOS student. 1320 may be in the 98 percentile, but it is widely believed that the samples the College Board used for those were skewed.
@mikemac
I didn’t realize that UCLA only had a management school for graduates. I’m not more interested in watching sports than my major. Do you have any other recommendations for business schools that I would have a chance at?
Also, what UC schools might I have a shot at?
UCI/UCR and UCB are the only UC’s which have Business schools for undergrad. USC’s Marshall School of Business is excellent. Also consider Santa Clara and San Diego State.
