So my GPA was 3.83 in freshmen and sophomore 1st and 2nd semester. Then Junior I messed it up. Currently I’m a junior and taking Chinese 3, Pre-cal, English 3, U.S History, Physics, and AP microeconomics. I’m got 3.3 (unweighted) GPA in the 1st semester in Junior. I barely got a C for AP microeconomics in 1st semester and now I’m currently getting an D- in AP microeconomics which might turn into a F. So should I drop out or just stay in AP microeconomics and get D. I know college will think bad that I gave up in the middle and don’t have perseverance but my GPA is falling and I don’t know what to do with my life. So should I drop out in AP microeconomics???!!!
You can’t really drop classes as a senior because it looks bad for college, but Junior year it might be fine even though it’s not ideal. Getting a D in any class is not good so if you think you can drop to a lower level econ class and get a B/A or something it might be worth it. Is there a particular reason your struggling so much in AP micro (ie it’s just a weak subject for you, it happens to be a relatively harder class at your school than others, hard teacher, etc)? If your struggling there’s a lot of AP prep books out there to buy to and resources online do extra practice to learn the material (from Princeton review, Barron, etc). I know last year I struggled a bit in AP bio cuz that class is impossible at my school and 1st semester I literally just brought my AP review guides early and did lots of extra practice and it helped a lot.
It’s the teacher. The teacher makes the Quiz and test 80% of our grade and mess up my grade. Also we have like test every week and I don’t understand the material. When the teacher taught us I really didn’t get any shit. But I try to keep up while watching Khan academy and the video helped more than the teacher. By the way what’s B/A???
The first thing you should do is to accept responsibility for your own deficiencies. “It’s the teacher” plainly is pathetic. Are any of your classmates receiving A’s or B’s from this teacher? if so, please explain why “it” isn’t “you,” and not the “teacher.” Time to start growing up; step number one is accountability.
@android1234 B/A means a ‘B’ or an ‘A’, and I’d suggest trying to either move down to regular econ (as suggested above) or get a tutor (maybe ask the teacher or your GC?).
Well, most of the people cheat on the test and tell like 30 is D and 25 is C and stuff. The teacher likes those students so they don’t get punished. Those who cheat normally get like A or B. Well, I don’t wanna cheat so I just get a bad grade on the test.
@android1234: Got it, thank you, the teacher is bad and the only students who do well cheat. Please re-read post #3.
Hey, what’s up guys. I talked to the office about this situation and said I can drop the class. But on my transcript instead of W(withdraw) I’ll just get a blank space for 2nd semester. So in the transcript it’s going to say AP microeconomics 1st semester C but in 2nd semester it’s going to be blank. The principle said that the blank is going to make college question like wtf happened. But some of my friends say it’s better to drop it rather than getting an F or a D.
@android1234 - I think that might be an issue at very top colleges, but with your current GPA, you aren’t going to be realistically targeting the top 50 schools in the country anyway. And that’s ok. There are lots of excellent schools just beyond about that level that would love to have you, assuming you straighten up and do B+/A level work from here on out.
Glad it worked out somehow.
Anything is better than a D or F on your transcript. Better they see good grades and be confused when they see a blank space than see your completely failing a class. Colleges care more about the grade and upward trend from your hard last term than to see you struggle and fail. There usually is always an additional comments (at least for common app schools) so you can explain what happened and what the blank means so college admissions’ don’t think you got suspended or something bad.
@stepay i think top 50(us news) is possible though. You don’t know my grade yet for SAT and SAT subject test. Also I have a lot of extracurricular activities. I know many people who got lower GPA than me and got like 1800 in SAT but into top 50. They always smoke and drink alcohol but they managed to get into UC Irvine, University of Washington, and etc. So anythings possible even your GPA is like 3.5 or 3.0. Too early to judge a person by just seeing GPA. Anyways thanks to all of you helping me out. Have a fantastic day
@android1234 - Well, UC Irvine and University of Washington would be top 50 of “National Universities” as declared by US News and World Report, but I was thinking more top 50 overall, so you have to include all the excellent liberal arts colleges too. If you do that, UC Irvine and University of Washington aren’t in the top 50 colleges in the country. I maintain that with about a 3.5 GPA, unless you have an outstanding SAT score or you are a recruited athlete or some other such outlier thing, that getting into one of the best 50 colleges in the country isn’t likely to happen. But, just beyond about the top 50, your chances start to greatly improve. Good luck.
@stepray oh I get you. So like amherest, MIT, Princeton and etc. Well, I’m not going to like the those great schools. I’m just thinking about UCLA and others. Someone I know got 29 ACT and GPA 3.85 and got into UCLA. Well, I don’t really care about Harvard, Yale, Chicago because it’s better to go to a university that fits you. Good grades in average university > low grades in top university. Anyways thanks
