Help! which prep school is best for a brainy kid: Boston

Thanks nemom! Too bad it's too far away for us! Same problem we had with BUA. Commonwealth looks like another great school that would have been a good fit for my son. Good luck to the OP!

Buckingham Browne and Nichols is a great school for a "brainy" kid--Cambridge day school
Strong language programs including Russian, Chinese and Arabic

As I recall, one of the previous posters is correct--you can only be a day student at Andover if you live in an ajoining town--No Andover, Reading etc

Re math competitions - I wouldn't judge a school much by HMMT. It's a good competition, but a lot of schools skip it. Probably the AMC/AIME/USAMO series is more telling, and I think just about all the schools on the OP's list would do that.

My D was crazy about Commonwealth as an 8th grader, but grew to be more interested in ECs as she approached 9th. She was accepted at Milton (day student), Winsor (Roxbury's other "half"), and Commonwealth, and we had a tough time deciding. Ultimately, it was the abundance of ECs and the diversity at Milton. The kids there sample lots of things--boys will play baseball but also be in the dance concert. For my D, exploring was key to her choice. Commonwealth is an outstanding school with a very specific feel to it. The kids do get close there.

Did you consider Buckingham Browne and Nichols?

Having been a day student at a boarding school (walking distance from Andover) I’d have to warn about any commute that couldn’t be done by bicycle. Unless you have a lot of friends from your town there, you really do miss a lot of the campus scene— assuming that is what you want.

Roxbury Latin. A few years back they had 12 of the top 24 high school math students in the State of Massachusetts. They have more Math levels and the top math students complete Calculus BC sophomore or junior year and use senior year for “advanced Math topics”. They are the number 3 feeder school to MIT (largest % of class attending). If your kid is very bright then you want them in a class with other very bright kids. Its a great school and the kids are happy there.
