My son is current sophomore and would like to finish up at a bs for junior and senior year.
B-B+ student, taking SSAT in December but guessing he will be 55-70% range, good all round athlete--lacrosse is critical sport. Wants to be able to get to skiing on weekends--not a racer but good expert skier.

We think he needs some academic support to keep him on track (some ADD type issues but needs no accommodation). Study skills support would be helpful.

Looking in New England/Eastern New York.

Suggestions for top quality academic schools with strong student support if needed. Strong in sports especially lacrosse. Close enough to ski area to be able to ski. Bonuses would be schools with some outdoor adventure components and schools that do more than just sit in the classroom to teach and learn.

Your suggestions would be most welcome.

Proctor Academy in NH might be worth looking into

How good is the lacrosse; does he want to play at a very high level?

Good varsity level at large public high schoool. He is a fearless mostly defensive player. Played football to train for lacrosse. Just wants to play with the best he can.

You might want to have a look at Salisbury.

Top prep schools for lacrosse according to max preps:
- Salisbury
- Deerfield
- Hotchkiss
- Brunswick
- Brewster
- Taft
- Avon old farms
- Westminster
- Rivers
- Middlesex
- Exeter
- Kimball Union

Some of these are stronger academically than others.

Brunswick is a day school in Greenwich, CT and Rivers is a day school in Weston, MA.

Millbrook, Millbrook, NY

What about the academics and support at these schools?

Millbrook
Proctor

Millbrook is a very well rounded School. Great sense of community driven by a culture of community service. Academics and sports are strong. Campus is huge and amazing. College placements are solid. Drew Casertano, the headmaster, is really excellent. It’s also the only School in the U.S. with a fully functioning, accredited zoo. The School is worth a visit.

I am no expert but I would say 2,3,10,11 are difficult, academically speaking. 1,7,12 are easier and 6 in the middle. The rest I do not know. I am mainly basing this on friends and collegues who children attend these schools and what I have read on the boards.

fif likes Millbrook. Beautiful campus in Dutchess County, great Head , pretty solid academics, decent college record. Solely looking at it from a lacrosse point of view, they are an above average D-II school, and get killed when they play West I teams. No football.

What I really interested in besides lacrosse is the level of academic support if my son needs it. For example Proctor seems to have a great Study Skills program. Do any of these other schools have such a program or other formalized academic support besides just seeing the teacher or advisor.

Paralane–what is your connection to Millbrook since you recommend it so highly?
Also I cannot find anything on the Millbrook website which indicates that they provide any academic support. There is a an Academic Center page but it is blank. Are you aware of what type of academic programs they offer?

Miss fif looked at Millbrook two years ago, and we were told quite specifically that Millbrook did not offer an Academic Support System™. They seemed kinda proud of it.
We ended up at Berkshire because of the excellent program there. The program at Millbrook may have changed since then.

Many schools (including some in the so-called Hades) offer academic support, ranging from tutors to study skills.

FiF is right…most of the schools we looked at offered some form of academic support. They want their students to succeed. It would depend if you mean very specific support however, such as for ADD or some type of LD. Not all schools offer this type of support. There are schools that offer such programs and lacrosse (not necessarily good lacrosse though). However on the list mentioned before, I believe Brewster is the only one to offer ADD/LD support…

My son is at Salisbury and plays lacrosse. They have a great lax program, and players are often recruited into some very strong colleges. Salisbury also has excellent academic support. They have a Learning Center which your son can sign up for. The center offers 1:1 or group support depending on the needs of the student. What is really nice about the Learning Center is they build the extra support right into your child’s day; usually during a free period so they don’t have to go after classes or during study hall. Salisbury also offers a structured study hall and teaches students study support skills. My son has not used the Learning Center, but it is really nice to know it is there in case he needs it in the future. I think around a quarter of the student body take advantage of it. Good luck!

I agree that Salisbury is also an excellent School with a great Lax program. I knew a fantastic football and lacrosse player for Salisbury who just lost his life about a year ago in a tragic accident, but who loved the School and said so constantly.

I’m not sure what is meant by the OP re: an Academic Support program. I have a chunk of personal experience with a Millbrook family whose daughter was graduated in 2008 and who had some serious ADHD / math challenges that the School worked with very successfully. I also think that the chairman of the Board of Trustees, the Headmaster and the Admissions Office are focused on those students who, in sum, are tremendous contributors but have areas where they may need some extra attention.

The School’s community service program has been a part of the School since its founding and influences the development of the students’ personalities, in a good way.

Thank you for your comments Miss fif. I am curious about the academic support at Berkshire. The only thing I find on their website is the writing center. What other supports are provided?
Formal skills training? Teacher Tutors? Peer tutors?

I had crossed Berkshire off the list because of the lack of information on the website, I would be interested to know if I am wrong to do that and should keep it on the list.
