Help with AP Calculus BC?

Okay, so I'm a junior in AP Calculus BC. I'm struggling SO MUCH. I'm not failing, but my first semester grade was, overall, a C.

I've never gotten anything lower than a 92 in math in previous years. My teacher doesn't teach very well, but I do come after school for help. I'm trying my best. I do all the homework and study for every test. I've got 3 calculus textbooks at home. At this rate, I'd be happy with a B- the next two quarters to get on the Honor Roll. Everyone who does well in my class either is super smart or a cheater...and I'm not going to cheat. I have A's in all my other classes.

Is it possible for me to at least get a 4 on the AB part of the AP exam so I can at least get out of Calculus I? I'm going into Business so it doesn't matter because I can take Calculus w/Business Applications, but I don't want to feel like I've wasted my whole entire year in this class. And it's too late to drop out.

What are some suggestions to raising my grade and studying for the AP Exam? Which books are the best?

If you were really struggling first semester of BC then it might be hard to get a 4/5 on the AB portion since the first semester of BC is almost the whole AB curriculum…
To get yourself ready, find released ap calc exams on the internet and keep doing problem. If you want in depth review, I would pick a barron’s review book. If not, stick with princeton review.

horusofoz: Okay, I see your point. I’ll try to get one of those books and practice with previous exams.

I was in the same situation. However, i am in AP Calc AB and i’m a senior. My first test on limits i got a 73%. And my derivatives test i got around a 60%. I was getting so desperate because it was the only class i got a B in. My AP English Lit is the HARDEST class in the school and i got an A in the class (not trying to brag), but it just shows that calc was hard for me. Then i started to go to study group and my teacher helped us on a test that was coming soon. I got two B’s on my following calc tests and then i was so determined to get an A in a test that i would do anything. I went to Khan Academy, PatrickJMT and other calc tutorial websites and i kept on going to study group and i got a 110% on my latest test! I also have the Princeton Review book to help me. I have a 91% now and i want it to stay like that. You just need to be really dedicated to that one class and you will see results :)

I would say that it would be much harder to catch up in BC than it is in AB because there is more material to learn in BC at a quicker pace.

Take lots of AB sample tests. Most of the problems on the AB test are easy after you understand the concepts (calculating derivatives, integrals, etc.)

Jordan134: I’ve checked out Khan Academy, but not anything else, so maybe I should do that. Ahh…I should get a prep book, now, too, since that would probably help.

horusofoz: I see your point. I probably won’t get any credit for Calculus II at all at this rate.

aoeder: Okay. That’s what my teacher told me today as well.

Thanks, guys!
