I guarantee that a 4.0 unw, 8aps, act - 33, 34 will get into CWRU with the offer of huge Merit award.
@MiamiDAP But if you don’t show interest, that will get you on CWRU’s waitlist…have seen it many times.
bopper,
I do not know what “show interest” means. If one applied to school, then this applicant is interested in this school. My D. with exactly the same stats as OP except for less APs as D’s school did not allow for more than 6, was accepted at CWRU with the Merit offer that left only $5k / year balance for us to pay in tuition. D. did not treat CWRU any differently than other colleges that she applied to. She visited multiple times and one of the coaches was interested in her for his team, but it is Div. III, so there were no scholarships attached. I believe that the offer came before her multiple visits. She visited CWRU, OSU and Miami multiple times simply to make sure that she chooses the right college for herself. D. choose attending at Miami, which was much better fit for her college years.
@MiamiDAP, @bopper, what @bopper says (“don’t show interest, that will get you on CWRU’s waitlist”) is exactly what happened to my D. Your D “visited multiple times” is “showing interest”, and a lot of it, I think. D applied to their bs/md program, but never had chance to visit the campus. On a phone interview for the undergrad part, it was like: Interviewer: “what did you like about the campus?”; D: “I’m sorry I didn’t have chance to visit”; Interviewer made some very annoyed-sounding comments and then hang up. They waitlisted her. While on waitlist, CWRU made a very generous merit aid offer.
Frankly, the truthful answer to question: “what did you like about the campus?” for CWRU is "Nothing, I hated it ". Of course, nobody who is truly interested would be truthful. However, choosing the college without visiting it multiple times would not even occur to my D. She was even choosing Medical Schools this way, went to Second Look events at both of her finalists, and her decision flipped based on her last visit. How anybody can choose the college without visiting?
^ I understand what you are saying, and agree. It is only that, to the ears of the interviewer, she could interprete the visit/no visit in such way. And the interviewer’s reaction clearly indicated that. My D was not really interested in the UG part only, so it was more like try the combined and if invited for the program interview, then seriously look. It was the same way (no visit) with NW/Feinberg combined program and went for the program interview, and she did find the med school in the city of chicago really nice, but still didn’t visit the NW campus because the interview with the program director was so tough that she knew what result she will get, and spent the rest of the visit exploring downtown Chicago instead and meeting friends at U Chicago. What I wanted to say was that CWRU looks really carefully at the applicant’s interest in the school, and a common(?) way to find out is by asking the visit question. Just so this info may be useful for future applicants.
updates and a question:
D won the bryn mawr book award and was admitted to tufts adventures in veterinary medicine (avm) summer program which is competitive but not sure how competitive. Not sure if either will make much of a difference in college apps but lmk if you have an opinion.
She takes the act again on saturday, she was fairly motivated in the past but now she badly wants to show up a guy and she’s really been at it. If only I had known this is what it took, I’m sure I could have engineered something or other!
here’s the question, D is taking ap physics next year and thought to lighten her load with ab calc as opposed to bc calc. She asked me this evening if bc might make a difference at her reaches. She found out that ab and bc have the same curriculum through the midterm, so it probably won’t effect her grade.
thoughts on ab vs bc for her?
tia!
D’s sat IIs are in:
bio - 790
apush - 720
not sure how the 720 will play at her top schools (though she did receive a 5 on ap exam). Maybe she should re-take or take english lit…
NO NEED to retake apush SAT II test.
IF she has not taken AP Lang/AP LIT test, AND she HAS taken the AP lit CLASS, then it wont hurt to take one or both of those tests.
And I see no reason to NOT take calc AB.
it seems to me her scores should be >= 750 for duke/dartmouth, no?
That WOULD be ideal BUT SAT subject scores are NOT as critical as SAT scores/ grades/ and LOR’s. Her 5 on the AP test SHOWS she understood the material.

Rice(nv) 1/4 with gpa=94 sat = 2050 (many rejections with similar stats of D)
Northwestern 3/7 with gpa=95 sat = 2200 (many rejections with similar stats of D)
*I noted “rejections with similar stats comments” to differentiate schools that have denied kids with similar stats as opposed to schools where we don’t have data with similar kids. I’m thinking she may have a better chance at the latter. Based on this line of thinking, it seems to me she has a better chance with a dartmouth ed app than duke.
I still think this list is too top heavy. And I would put Cal in the far reach pile.
thanks @thumper1 , obviously it’s top heavy, we have 6 safeties/matches and 12 reaches! we hope to whittle it down to 3 safeties, 4 matches and 4 reaches. And thanks for the input on Cal, we visited last week while on vacation, she loved it, it’s been off our radar and we had no idea what her chances are other than a little naviance data. Discouraging though, I thought/hoped it might be a little more probable than duke and dartmouth.
Because she is a full pay OOS student, that might help…but really, even instate students with high stats have no guarantee of an acceptance to Cal.
Good luck with the whittling! There are lots of great schools on that list…
I don’t think its too reach heavy as long as she is truly okay with attending a safety if it comes to that (which I doubt it will)
She has a perfect gpa and 19 colleges to apply to. That is just too many. She actually wants to attend all 19 of these colleges? Make her life easier–ask her to eliminate 7 of these schools. She is going to get in to many of them. She can only attend one.
thanks @Lindagaf, actually we’re aiming for 11, 3 safeties, 4 matches and 4 reaches
That’s more like it:-)
actually, some good news, there’s 18 in the list above and i forgot to eliminate northwestern, so we’re down to 17, just 6 to go!
I’m an idiot, forgot to get rid of amherst too! 5 to go!
