Hi! My DS has a 29 ACT, 3.6 UW GPA and 3.8 W GPA (if that sounds weird, it’s because school only started weighting his junior year). Has great strength of schedule, few but “deep” ECs, one sport, JV. He is unhooked. I’m concerned that his list needs more safeties; son hates the word “safety” and is also feeling burnt out. I also wonder if what we have as Matches are really matches.
Would you say I’ve categorized the below list correctly? He is planning on EA-ing wherever he can, so, worst case, he could widen the net in late December when some of those decisions are in and some RD deadlines have not yet passed. I of course have the fear of “getting in nowhere” looming large in my mind, but I’m battling a burnt out overwhelmed teen who does not want to do any more visits or add any more schools to the list, and I feel we may be pulling teeth to get these applications done.
Would appreciate opinions on this list/categorization! Thanks!
Reaches
Georgetown (yes, we both know, huge reach)
U of Richmond
Wake Forest
William and Mary
Matches (? are they?)
Elon
Loyola Chicago
Skidmore
Fordham
Furman
I think your list is good, especially if he applies EA to schools when possible and gets some acceptances in December. If you want a couple of extra safety school you might look into Siena (a nice college which has a free application and admitted both of my kids a few weeks after their application was complete) as well as UScranton.
Thanks @happy1 I think you put Fordham on my radar on another thread and he is interested! Also thanks @roycroftmom. I don’t think he feels confident deciding on an ED.
Opinions still welcome! Including safeties that are easy and free to apply to LOL! Thinking about adding St. Louis U as a safety since they are rolling admissions.
Then definitely look at the fast forward application at Siena…It is free and I don’t think you even need an essay! Both of my kids were happy to have an acceptance in hand during October. Neither kid attended Siena but it did end up as one of the top few choices for my S.
I’m going back a few years, so forgive me if I’m wrong, but he should be able to EA his safeties and hear before Christmas. My S14 was accepted to St. Joe’s and Furman with slightly lower stats. He did show a lot of interest in Furman, though (visit, 2 interviews, etc)
Also, a number of his choices are female-heavy which might help him. W&M, Furman, Elon, Loyola.
Thanks @MYOS1634 ! Is there a list of schools that don’t require extra essays? That would be nice!
Also thanks @citymama9 , just talking about Skidmore last night. Unfortunately he missed their visit to our city (We got a postcard about it 2 days prior but he was already scheduled to work).
