Help with creating my education plan for computer science and/or engineering major

I plan to attend De Anza community college and transfer to UCB, UC Davis, UC Irvine or cal poly.
I am not the best at physics and dropped out of AP chemistry because it was too hard. (I got an A in regular chemistry though and my physics teacher was terrible). I took AP computer science this year and second semester was definently harder (arrays, recursion).
First of all should I attend West Valley college instead (semester vs quarter), given my anxiety about science classes?
I am most concerned about not being able to transfer until 3 years into college. I would like to transfer within 2 years, so any tips on how to make this process easier for me?
I want to take “fun” classes this summer; I tried to prioritize it by those that count as GE credit.
Summer 2017:
-public speaking (5 units)
-web development (3) [Hybrid class]
-principles of microeconomics (4) [online]
-intro to creative writing (3) [online]
~maybe: boxing at west valley(1 unit), accounting 1 (5?, online), nutritional studies (3 units, online)

Fall 2017
-EWRT 1 or 1Honors
-Calculus 1A
-Astronomy+lab or chemistry 1A (so I can get my biological GE out of the way+I’m interested In astronomy)
-Java Programming 35A (or 36A or 36B)
-Mandarin 1 (I might skip to Mandarin 2 because I took Mandarin in HS. I also want to receive a Mandarin certificate of Achievement, which only requires 6 quarters of Mandarin & 1 history course).
-chamber orchestra (I really want to get better at playing violin & this is only 1 day/week. But idk if I will need to practice a lot besides lab time since lt is 2-3 hours.

Winter 2018:

  • EWRT 1B or 2?
    -Calc 2
    -chemistry 1A + lab
  • a programming class
    -Mandarin 2
    -chamber orchestra

Spring 2018:
-Calculus 3
-Mandarin 3
-chamber orchestra
-chemistry 1B or physics (mechanics) or bio
-a programming class
~principles of macroeconomics?
~an art class for GE reqs

Summer 2018:
-programming?
-political science?

Fall 2018:
-discrete math 22
-programming
-Mandarin 4
-chamber orchestra
-data abstraction and structures (CS)
-physics 4B

Winter 2019:
-programming
-Mandarin 5
-physics 4C
-chamber orchestra

Spring 2019:
-Mandarin 6
-Asian history
-programming
-chamber orchestra

Is this schedule possible? I am mostly focused on summer & fall 2017 right now.
Obviosuly nothing is final and I need a few more classes towards my GE & my specific major.
I don’t think I would be able to work during this time sadly.
How time should I except to spend towards each class?
Thank you so much for your time!

Okay. So I go to DA and my honest opinion for you is if you go to DA, girl, you’re going to have to pray you get into a decent science class. I’m not a science major so I don’t experience this first hand but from what my friends tell me, it’s SUPER HARD to get into the science classes you need and sometimes you end up with the terrible teachers. As a result, people end up staying 3+ years especially if they’re science majors. That being said, the thing I like about DA is that the professors are overall, pretty good. I’m a Political Science major and the professors for that department are so amazing. I’ve had professors who came from UC Berkeley, Stanford, etc. and they genuinely care about their students. However, the negative side about DA is that it’s so impacted and so many students attend, you’re going to have difficulty getting the class you need. For WVC however, it’s fairly good. I have a friend who grinded his way through WVC and transferred to Sacramento State within a year. I don’t think it should be hard to get your classes there (or it shouldn’t be as bad as DA). But, I also know WVC just implemented this thing where you can get your tuition paid for your first year so I know a lot of students are trying to take advantage of that so… it might be more crowded with that program than in previous years. My brother is graduating HS this year and he plans on attending to DA too but after he heard about the free 1 year tuition at WVC, he’s considering it so yeah, take that into account if you plan on attending WVC. I’d also advise you to take classes at other schools simultaneously. I did almost everything at DA and only did math at EVC and it worked out fine. It’s a little irritating/tiring working a schedule around DA’s schedule to ensure I can go to EVC at the same time but in the end, I’m glad I did that because the math teachers at DA are not as great as EVC’s.

Schedule Wise-

Summer 2017 → Your units are capped at 6-8units? Something like that at DA. You also have to keep in mind that summer sessions go by fast. Don’t overwhelm with so many classes all at once. I’d advise you to do 1-2.

Fall 2017 → Don’t waste your time doing Astronomy if you’re a science major. No point. I’d advise you to take physics or chem (whatever’s required for your major). Chem is under physical science and so is Astronomy. Don’t waste your time doing astronomy and just go straight into chem. You need the class. I’d say get that out of the way. If you have time your second year, then take astronomy. English1A is fine. Just make sure you’re not placed in any pre-req class before EWRT1A. (Also, do it online. SUPER EASY. Take Leonard. I took her class, tons of EC). Java Programming should be fine unless there’s a pre-req for it. Check. I’m not a Comp Sci major so idk the pre-reqs for the classes.

Winter 2018 → Go straight into EWRT2. EWRT2 is required for transferring (it’s under Area 1B on DA’s IGETC). Take 1B only if you have time. After finishing 1A, you’ll proceed to 1B/1C/1D. DA is on quarter system so you’d have to take it in that order. Again, do Chem1A in Fall and then proceed to the next course.

Spring 2018 → Calc if fine. Finish Chem if you can. Doing an art and econ is fine. Should be fairly easy for those two classes and you get to tackle your GEs.

Btw: Your Mandarin classes are fine. Just note, DeAnza’s language classes only go up to level 3. Very rarely have I seen a language class go pass level 3 so I’d verify the schedule when they’re released

Summer 2018 → Your classes seem fine. I’d also recommend doing history instead of Poli Sci. Take history online. Take it with Mujal (Hist17B?). It’s the easiest class you’ll take at DA.

Fall 2018 - Spring 2019 → Your schedule seems fine just follow IGETC and make sure the courses you’re taking are also needed for the schools (You can check by using Assist.org)

**Recommendation: Do as much GEs as you can. You’ll save yourself so much money taking it at a CC rather than at whatever 4-year you end up transferring to. Here are some recommendations for you.

Area 1A (English) - 1A (Online)
Area 1B (Critical Thinking) - EWRT2 (Online is doable but you can do it on campus if you prefer to)
Area 1C (Speech) - Speech 1 (Pretty easy)
Area 2 (Math) - Should be fulfilled with your Calc classes (Math 1A/B/C/D)
Area 3 (Arts & Humanities) - Humi1 (Art), Phil 1 & 8 (Online)
Area 4 (Social & Behavioral Science) - Hist 17A/B/C (Online) [Do one of the series online, super easy class], Econ 1 or 2 (online), & Soc 1 (Online)
Area 5 (Physical & Biological Science) → Should be fulfilled as you’re a science major (especially if you’re a physics major)
Area 6 (Foreign Language) → Should be fulfilled with your HS (whatever 4-year you transfer to asks for your transcript so they can verify with that) & since you plan on taking Mandarin at DA, should be fine as long as you finish Mandarin 2 MINIMUM

Also, SEE A COUNSELOR. They help so much. I was able to plan my classes accordingly with their help.

Feel free to message with any questions you have. I’ll be happy to help! I’m transferring to UC Davis this Fall so hey, you’re on the right track. Good luck!

Use http://www.assist.org to see what courses you can take at the various CCs to cover the courses needed for your major at various target schools.

Your schedule seems pretty hard. Most engineering/CS majors transfer in 3 years instead of 2, so I would consider planning for a 3 year transfer. You’d have more time to dedicate to all your classes, more time for ECs to have a more competitive application, and you’d probably be less stressed. There’s nothing wrong with 3 years instead of 2, it might actually end up benefiting you.

Thats too much for a regular person. Some UCs even tell students that they should not try to finish igetc at CC for the 2 year plan. A normal path for stem major is 3 years. Dont underestimate CC classes.

3 years even at west valley college? And thank you for all the replies!

@AysanSusan Realistically speaking, with your major, you’d have to grind your way to get out in two years. Just like others, take your time and transfer in three. There’s nothing wrong with doing community college for three years. I actually did that and am transferring this fall. You’ll be fine. You’ll find in college that some students stay for 3 years or more and while everyone’s different, there’s no shame in doing CC for 3 years. WVC is a good school. You’ll enjoy it there
