Help with fasfa

so i had a pell grant in 2013 of 2822.50 and filed my taxes, i think the tax preparer looked at my 1098-t file and reported it to the irs,

anyway on the fafsa where it says Grant and scholarship aid reported to the IRS should i type in the amount on my 1098-t file or can i leave this box unchecked

You need to look on your tax return and see how much of your grants/scholarships were included on your tax return. It should be on the wages line with sch and the $ amount written next to it. (any scholarships/grants used to pay for non qualified expenses such as room and board are taxable).

If anything was reported to the IRS on your tax return, DO NOT IGNORE THE QUESTION. It is used to subtract the reported scholarships and grants out of your income so that they do not impact your EFC. If you do not answer the question, FAFSA will use your entire income, including the reported scholarships and grants, to calculate your EFC which will likely increase your EFC.

I am NOT a tax expert.

My understanding is that your 1098t should have the amount if scholarships and grants, and also the amount of qualified expenses. You should have kept a list of additional qualified expenses (e.g. Books). Qualified expenses are NOT included on your taxes.

Any grants or scholarships you received in excess of tuition, fees, books must be reported as income.

Line 1 for Form 1040EZ, line 7 for Form 1040A & Form 1040. Or ask your tax preparer if you have any taxable scholarships.

If the amount on Line 1 of your tax return is the amount that is on your W2(s), then you do not have any taxable grants/scholarships. In this case, you do not report anything on the FAFSA for that question.

so the wages line (line 7) on my tax return is the same as my wages in box 1 of my w2, so i dont have to report anything right?

So you don’t have taxable scholarship.

It should be zero.
