Help With Merit Aid Package!!!

Ok so I applied to a school that’s a public in state school and they have merit aid packages and my GPA meets the full tuition requirement but my SAT is 50 points lower than the lowest scholarship. I have gotten accepted elsewhere with other scholarships but I really want to go to this school. Do I have any chance of appealing due to the fact my GPA is so high or can I use the other merit aid I get if I go to another school to ask them if they will possibly give me some merit aid? It’s to the point where I’m considering taking a bridge year to retake my SAT and reapply the next semester and get a full ride! HELP!

You can ask…but some schools have very firm cut offs in terms of merit aid requirements. You didn’t meet the cut off. Any chance you are retaking the SAT now?

The other school obviously has a lower threshold for awarding merit aid. I’m not sure your A school will consider other merit awards…,but you can ask.

Are these considered “peer schools”…or is one more selective than the other?

Keep in mind…most merit aid is given to students who maticulate for the fall semester. If you put this off until spring, semester, you might not get what you think you will.

Plus…starting mid year has the potential to put you out of sequence for courses as most year long courses start the fall term.

The school I want to go to is Temple University but I got the scholarship from University of South Florida. And it’s too late to submit SAT but I am going to call them and ask what my options are because this aid is much needed especially since I won’t be getting anything from FAFSA

Call and ask. Is your net price to attend USF less than for Temple?

Which is your state of residence?

You can try, but frankly, the GPA is less important in this circumstance. There is so much grade inflation at schools today and sometimes it’s high because of a less-rigorous course load, so it’s doubtful that the school will award based on that.

Schools use test scores as a way to help determine how strong the student is.

Schools give merit typically because they want the high test scores to help with their rankings. They want more students whose test scores are within the upper 25%…so that’s where the merit is targeted. Getting more with high GPAs doesn’t hlep them.

Merit typically works like this…

There is a HUGE pool of students with very high GPAs

There is a smaller pool of students with high test scores.

There is even a smaller pool of students with BOTH high scores and high GPAs… <<== these are the ones who typically get the merit awards.

Is the other school a “peer school”

What is the name of the school that you want?

I thought the OP planned to attend Temple for two years as a commuter.

OP, what will it cost per year for you to go to USF?

What will it cost per year for you to attend Temple?

Thumper I live in Pa so Temple is cheaper even without the money but honestly I really need the money. University of South Florida is the school in florida that has offered me money, it is a good school, considered the “third” flagship school in florida

Without aid I plan to live on campus Freshman and Sophomore year and then move home for Junior and Senior year

am in the process of deciding what college I will attend. I want to attend a 4 year university that is in state but is a quasi-public school so it has a pretty high cost for being in state. My parents want me to go to Community college or a branch campus for 2 years but I am strongly opposed because I really want to move out and start to live alone, meet new people, and have more challenging classes. Basically if I went to this college I would be 75,000 in debt. My major (MIS) has a very good job look however so I feel as if it would be tough but not impossible to pay off. Please help me because I know they want me to be financially sound but I really really want to leave with a passion!

Borrowing $75k is CRAZY

Besides…at this point, no one knows if you’ll complete a major in MIS…but even if you did, that is still toooooooo much debt.

kids change their majors all the time. Don’t commit to a lot of debt for a major or career that may not ever happen.

This is a different school, I would only being borrowing 11K by doing this but if I got merit aid I would be able to stay on campus all 4 years
