I am a pretty organized fellow, but I am conflicted of how I should organize my belongings for college. Supplies wise, would you recommend getting a folder and notebook for each class, or a 1 in binder and notebook for each class? (I have time to go back to my dorm and drop anything off in between classes). If a binder, how would you organize everything effectively? Also, this might depend on the college you go to, but is there a lot of paperwork that y’all receive? I’m most likely going to take notes the old fashioned way with my notebook rather than my computer, so I feel like notebooks are key for me. Anyone have any good organization tips they they use? Thanks for anyone who helps!
For reference, I am taking general chem with lab, bio with lab, psychology, philosophy, and a random college life class.
If you are happiest with notebooks, start out with those. You can always upgrade to a binder if you decide you want one.
My personal preference is no binders. Notebooks should suffice and most paperwork in college is done electronically, so a notebook and folder should work just fine. You can also take notes on your laptop if you’d like in many classes – so in some semesters I didn’t use any notebooks at all. I just wouldn’t want to be lugging a backpack full of binders in between classes or go back to my dorm.
What I did was carry a pad of patper with me. I would take notes on the paper. After a couple of days/week, I woudl take those notes and put them into a binder for the particular classes. Of course if you have a class where you need to show your notes (e.g., science lab) or have open note quzzes, then bring a notebook for that class.
For now my daughter has 1 notebook per subject and 1 folder to share. She will wait until classes start to see if she needs more than that. She will have a school issued ipad pro so may end up using that instead of a notebook but won’t know until classes start. For this semester the most she has is two classes back to back. In high school she liked writing notes then typing them up at home.
@momtogirls2 that sounds nice, I wish my school handed out ipad pros haha.
Thanks for everyone’s responses, everything is very helpful! One more question though; do you need any supplies for chem or bio labs such as a notebook, or will you buy an actual lab notebook in the start of the year?
Information about lab supplies that you might need to buy should come directly from your school. If the school hasn’t sent you this information already, or it isn’t posted on the chem and bio department websites, then assume you will receive the information when you arrive for orientation or when classes start.
The school bookstore will probably carry any specialized notebooks your professors require but if not, getting together with your new classmates to figure out where to find them is a time-honored tradition and bonding experience that probably dates back to antiquity.
